We Need Your Input

If you missed the 'Are You Ready' Survey

We would love to hear from you!

In order to help move Life Care Humboldt forward we need your help by completing our 'Are You Ready' Survey. This is a recent survey that was originally sent out this August, 2021. Our goal is to learn the extent of your interest to move into our Life Care Humboldt Community.

In this survey
we have projected prices for housing and home sizes. You can check out our sample floor plans HERE
to visualize your potential new home. Please note that the actual designs and sizes will differ.

We have had 266 of our supporters reply to the survey and they have used their voice to tell us what type of cottage or apartment they would want to live in.

IF YOU HAVEN'T FILLED OUT THE SURVEY NOW IS THE TIME.

Thank you for helping us by taking this survey

 Build-It Phase
Life Care Humboldt is now moving into our second phase of funding to raise $4 million. This is for pre-finance development expenses and additional funds for project support. By the end 2023 we will secure bond financing and begin construction.

The Build-It Phase:
  • An offer has been made on the Arcata Creekside property!
  • This next phase of development will last about 3 years.
  • We will raise $4 million from donors, grants, foundations, loans and partnerships/affiliations.
  • The community design will be finalized.
  • Land entitlements and permits will be completed.
  • Partnerships with sponsoring Life Plan Communities will be sought.
  • Negotiations ongoing to build 40 affordable senior cottages on our campus.
  • We will obtain construction bond financing by November 2023.
  • Projected 'move-in' date is June 2025.
Our focus now is asking for PLEDGES for 3 years, at which time we will be able to obtain permanent funding by bonds. A high priority for LCH is to document commitments from donors in the next 6-8 months. The more money we can get from local pledges, the more local control we have when negotiating with potential partners. Donors who pledge to give regularly over a period of time can make a bigger impact to our future with less of an impact on their personal finances at any one time.  We welcome pledges monthly, quarterly, semi-annually or annually.
How Much to Pledge?

A monthly pledge of $33.33 a month over 3 years totals: $1,200

A monthly pledge of $69.44 a month over 3 years totals: $2,500

A monthly pledge of $138.89 a month over 3 years totals: $5,000

A monthly pledge of $277.78 a month over 3 years totals: $10,000

A monthly pledge of $555.65 a month over 3 years totals: $20,000

Pledges/Donate
DONATIONS ARE TAX DEDUCTIBLE!

Ask your tax professional about the potential benefits of the following options:
  • Donors giving appreciated investments such as stock shares can deduct the investments’ full market value without paying capital gains tax on the appreciation and get a tax deduction equal to the current value of the donated stock!  Life Care Humboldt can accept stock donations.
  • Taxpayers who are taking a Minimum Required Distributions (MRD) from a Traditional IRA can reduce their taxable income by making a Qualified Charitable Distribution directly to a 501(c)(3) organization like LIFE CARE HUMBOLDT. This option may be desirable for people required to withdraw a Minimum Required Distribution (MRD) that exceeds their anticipated living expenses for the year.
  • Make larger charitable gifts! At a certain point, your total contributions to qualifying nonprofits may be high enough that itemizing makes sense. Otherwise, single filers are limited to a $300 deduction and joint filers are limited to a $600 deduction.

We Are Listening
A message from LCH

We have heard comments from the community stating, " Life Care Humboldt sounds like a good idea, but it is too expensive for me" or "Only the privileged will be able to afford it"

Inclusive not Exclusive

We believe that seniors deserve safe and stable housing regardless of income. Our interviews with low-income seniors underscored this fact. Life Care Humboldt has an opportunity to design a community with mixed income levels. Our core values that specifically address inclusivity include:
  • To welcome all people.
  • To adopt a model that ensures affordability and security.
  • To participate in and contribute to the well-being of the larger community.
                                            Our Intention

Our intention is to integrate housing for 32 low-income seniors into the Life Care Humboldt campus. Intergrating affordable senior housing is part of our vision. Our project will blend affordable housing into our community and allow for us to share common spaces and services. This will be a unique model for seniors that live in a Life Plan Community and we hope you will join us.

Why I Support Life Care Humboldt
By JoAnn Schuch
(Senior News Opinion Piece - October 2021)
There are many reasons I support Life Care Humboldt (LCH), the planned senior living community. I witnessed my father's death in one of our for-profit skilled nursing facilities (SNF), and I swore to work toward improving care for all older people in our community. READ MORE

Tallying the Cost of Growing Older *

What are the odds that you will need help with basic personal care as you age?

70% of older adults will need help.

Most of us would prefer to die suddenly in our homes with no prolonged disability or painful condition. A small number of us may get this reward. For many life will not wind down so smoothly. Richard Johnson, an economist at the Urban Institute, undertook a study in 2019 by which he found that over their life-times about 70% of older adults will need help from family caregiver or paid aides or some combination, in their own homes or in long-term care facilities.

More nuanced data comes from Dr. Alicia Munnell of the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College. Per her research, 17% of 65-year olds will need no long term care. Twenty-two percent (22%) will have minimal needs for help. Thirty-eight percent (38%) will need moderate support, for example while they recover from a heart attack, after which they can again function independently.  Almost one-quarter (25%) of older adults will develop severe needs, requiring many hours of help for more than three years.

Frequently, the need for help comes on suddenly when we are not prepared, and may require modifications to our homes for safety and mobility.

The entry fee for Life Plan Communities is not inexpensive, but could be a bargain if you are in the majority of older adults who need assistance due to injury, disease, or frailty. It could be considered as an insurance policy to help in challenging circumstances. Furthermore, all Life Plan homes are built according to "universal design" to promote mobility and safety for people with a range of disabilities. If you are considering moving into a Life Plan Community, such as Life Care Humboldt, this data could inform your plans and help guide a discussion with your loved ones.

My husband and I love our home that we built on Barry Ridge up in Kneeland 34 years ago. It is hard for us to imaging leaving. However, the model that LCH is proposing makes so much sense for us. Knowing we might be less of a burden to family as we age in a community that has assisted living, memory care and end of life care, provides true solace. The idea of living in a community where we can continue to have opportunities to be active and stimulated, feel useful and stay connected to the area that we have come to love, is exciting. And what a relief it would be to have someone else responsible for our home maintenance upkeep.
I see LCH as a real opportunity to enjoy and feel supported in whatever the next chapter of our lives may bring. I am so grateful to all of those working so hard to make LCH a reality.
