PREDATORY LENDNG
What is Predatory Lending?
Predatory lending is any lending practice where the borrower is taken advantage of by the lender. Predatory lenders impose lending terms that are unfair or abusive. This predatory practice is often committed against victims who are elderly or low-income. Source: Cornell Law School

Some examples:
  • Payday loans
  • Cash Advance loans
  • Car title loans
  • Tax refund anticipation loans
  • Pawn Shops

Predatory loans have  terms that generally benefit the lender at the expense of the borrower. Interest rates commonly are disguised as fees, and they range from 300%-500% annual percentage rate (APR)!

Compare that to 15%-30% APR on credit cards or 10%-25% rate for a personal loan from a bank or credit union.

Contact the Financial Empowerment Center if you are considering a high interest loan option. We can give you advice to help you manage your finances to avoid high interest rates and long-term commitments. For more information or to schedule an appointment, email info@fecsoco.org or call (703) 704-6101.

A CLIENT'S THANK YOU

Mark L. is a single dad; with a son in his freshman year of college. He was referred to the Financial Empowerment Center (FEC) by Melwood. Mark was seeking assistance from Melwood for car repairs. One of their requirements to receive this help was to meet with a financial coach. He first met with a financial coach in July to fulfill that requirement, and he has continued to work with his coach every two weeks. He has also consulted with our workforce development program. In April 2020, he received a COVID food grant from Britepaths and we helped him identify funds to pay off a medical bill.

Here are his words of thanks!

"Great, thank you so much! You all are truly the best and a wonderful blessing as well. I can't thank you enough for showing me a new britepath, pun intended! Have a wonderful evening!"

Respectfully,

Mark L.
