Latin American Film for the Month of October:

Stateless
Screening on October 7th,2021 at 6pm

Director Michèle Stephenson’s new documentary Stateless traces the complex tributaries of history and present-day politics, as state-sanctioned racism seeps into mundane offices, living room meetings, and street protests. At a time when extremist ideologies are gaining momentum in the U.S. and around the world, STATELESS is a warning of what can happen in a society when racism runs rampant in the government.

Land of Cranes with Aida Salazar and Marcos Nieves

October 5th at 7:00 pm via Zoom

The Center for Latin American Studies at the University of Utah is co-sponsoring a book talk with Aida Salazar winner of the 2021 Americas Award for her title Land of the Cranes.

Land of the Cranes is a heartfelt story of a young, bright 9-year-old girl, Betita, who weaves a lyrical story of reverse migration back to the ancient homeland of Aztlán, the land of the cranes.  Masterfully written in verse, Land of the Cranes explores the inhumane realities of detention and family separation while rooting the characters in culture and resilience.

What U.S. Companies Should Consider When Recruiting Foreign Talent

October 7th from 12:00-1:00 pm
Webinar

How and where people work has changed dramatically in recent years, and you can’t afford to be left behind with a redundant hiring policy. Remote work and work from home are the new normal now, so smart HR professionals are looking into all the possibilities these changes bring.  One of them is surely the possibility of international recruitment.

The webinar will focus on considerations employers should know to help prepare recruiting and hiring practices, including:

-Visa options for U.S. companies and eligibility criteria.

-Related considerations for foreign nationals seeking to establish a business in the United States.

Presented by Ana Maria Mieles, Esq. Dentons Cohen & Grigsby P.C.

Grannies Respond - Abuelas Responden
Grannies Respond is a national organization that hosts a network of cities around the U.S. where asylum-seekers are traveling through Bus Stations en route to their sponsored families.  Because Pittsburgh did not have such a program, we are creating a "stop".

We are looking for Spanish-speaking volunteers to meet buses that come in daily.  Volunteers can help as much or as little as they like - on a schedule or "as needed".  We often get advance notice of who's coming and what their needs are.  Mostly we are a friendly presence, help them understand their tickets, give out supplies such as snacks, drink, diapers, toiletries, etc. and make sure they're safely on their way to their next stop.

We require a 1-hour training and 2 observations at the Greyhound Bus Terminal with experienced volunteers.
