Biennial bedding

Riverside’s selection of locally grown biennial bedding is in now! We have wallflowers and sweet Williams as bare root plants (which come from our supplier environmentally packaged in nothing but newspaper), plus stocks, bellis daisies, wallflowers and sweet Williams in module packs. Planting these in September or October will give you flowers to look forward to in early spring. Any of these plants can be grown in pots or in the ground, and you could mix them with bulbs, such as daffodils or tulips, for added flower power.

Western Harbour - how you can help Riverside

Bristol City Council has launched a new public consultation for the regeneration of the Western Harbour area. Previous proposals for this area have put Riverside’s future in danger and we need your help to ensure that Riverside can continue to serve our community for years to come.

The council has commissioned consultants to perform a public engagement programme called ‘Harbour Hopes'. You can read more about the project and view an interactive map where you can leave your comments.

There is also a series of ‘mapping and making’ events planned where you can contribute your ideas. Riverside has been chosen as the venue for four of these workshops on Saturday 25 September (registration required). Even if you're not booked into one of these we are assured there will be the opportunity to find out the most up to date information on the day.

Many of you have already signed our petition in response to the original proposals, but if not you can still sign this in our shop, where you can also fill out a comments card with your views. Please also consider contacting your local councillor about this issue. We really appreciate your support!

Catch a ‘Cool Wave’!

New to Riverside this year is the fantastic trailing pansy ‘Cool Wave’. Perfect for pots, hanging baskets or in the border, this pansy will flower for you right through autumn and winter, and will continue into spring as well. Come and visit our bedding area to browse the lovely range of colours. We also have a great selection of more traditional pansies and violas, plus lots of other beautiful bedding options for autumn.

Shrubs to plant this autumn

We often get asked at this time of year if it’s too late to plant. In fact, autumn is a great time for planting! The garden soil has been warmed by summer temperatures, while increased rainfall helps plant roots to establish well. We are currently getting in some wonderful shrubs you can plant now for autumn and winter enjoyment.

Just a few to inspire you include:
Berberis - for beautiful autumn leaf colour from deciduous varieties
Cornus - for autumn leaf colour and striking bare stems in winter
Fatsia - for gorgeous glossy leaves year-round
Pyracantha - for vibrant berries (adored by birds as well!)
Skimmia - for colourful buds or berries
Viburnum tinus - for winter flowers followed by dark black berries

Come and see us for plenty more to choose from!

Happy to help.

If you have any questions at all then please feel free to contact us, we'd love to hear from you!
