2021 AIA TN Design & Honor Awards Going Virtual

Due to the recent rise of the delta variant of the coronavirus, we paused to consider how having an in-person awards event could affect the safety of our members. After careful consideration, the decision has been made to move from an in-person event to a VIRTUAL event.

We know this is disappointing. However, it is in the best interest of our membership. We will send out information about the virtual celebration once the details have been finalized. We look forward to celebrating and honoring our recipients in a meaningful way!

TN Historic Development Grant Recipients Announced

On Friday, Sept. 17, the TN Department of Economic & Community Development announced 26 recipients selected for the TN Historic Development Grants!

For several years now, AIA TN has worked a strong coalition of local preservation groups, chambers of commerce, and city/county mayors as well as the National Trust for Historic Preservation advocating for a state historic tax credit.  We had a victory in April 2021 when the Tennessee General Assembly approved the Historic Development Grant Program and allocated $4.8 million to renovate and preserve the State’s historic buildings.

“Tennessee’s historic buildings are a contributing factor to what makes our communities unique, and I applaud each of these grant recipients for taking on the task of rehabilitating and preserving these sites,” said TNECD Commissioner Bob Rolfe. “We are pleased to be a part of this program, which helps restore these structures while spurring additional economic and tourist development opportunities in each of these communities.”

August JE+DI Wednesday Warrior: Dillon Dunn

Our August recipient, Dillon Dunn, NOMA, LEED Green Associate, is a Nashville native whose passion for place-making and skateboarding (more on that later) led him to architecture. Dillon graduated at the top of his class from the University of Tennessee College of Architecture + Design in 2018.

During his time at the College, Dillon co-founded the University’s chapter of the National Organization of Minority Architecture Students and honed his research skills through various domestic and international research opportunities.

After graduation, Dillon was selected as a 2019 Fulbright Fellow and spent the majority of the year in Indonesia researching the architecture of religious pilgrimage sites.

September JE+DI Wednesday Warrior: Ann Aiken

Our September recipient, Ann Aiken, AIA, was the first licensed female architect in Chattanooga and ran her own practice in Chattanooga for 36 years. While being a woman presented real challenges in a predominately male profession, it also led to opportunities.

She was appointed to the Governor’s Commission for the restoration of the Tennessee State Capitol, and served on three national AIA committees from 1986-1992. She also served on the Chattanooga Historic Zoning Commission for nine years, UT Chattanooga Chancellor’s Round Table, and UT Knoxville Board of Advisors.

Chattanooga Venture, a public-private planning process that led to the development of Chattanooga’s riverfront, took a significant amount of her time between 1984 and 1990.
