UBC Farm History:
Think&EatGreen@School

Think&EatGreen@School (TEGS) was a program that brought food systems learning –– from gardening to making food –– to classrooms around the Lower Mainland. TEGS ran from 2010-2015 and was relaunched in 2017-2019. We remember Dr. Alejandro Rojas, TEGS co-founder and champion of youth food literacy, who passed away in 2018. Learn more about his legacy at the LFS ReachOut article.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

The intergenerational march will take place at noon outside the Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre, where there will be a Musqueam welcome, bannock and tea.

The route will be lined with informative placards and volunteers will speak to the history of residential schools. The march concludes at the Engineering cairn, where elders and children will be invited to add handprints or messages (COVID protocols allowing) to the painted cairn. There will be words from Land and Food Systems Dean Rickey Yada and Sheryl Staub-French, Associate Dean, EDI and professor of Civil Engineering, Applied Science.

Sept 30th will be the first of a series of events by a joint STEM faculty group - APSC, LFS, FoS, Forestry. Weekly events focusing on the history of Indian Residential Schools and the impacts on survivors will stream out after this initial event.

Orange shirts are currently available for sale at the UBC bookstore and the Museum of Anthropology. We encourage attendees to demonstrate their allyship by wearing an orange shirt.

In honour of the upcoming National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day on September 30th, the UBC Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre is hosting an in-person film screening.

“Returning Home” weaves the story of two parallel narratives. The first is the story of Phyllis Webstad, a Survivor of the former St. Joseph’s Mission residential school in Williams Lake and originator of Orange Shirt Day. The second is the story of the steady decline of wild pacific salmon. This 45-minute film is the first feature length documentary produced by Canadian Geographic.

Registration is required for this free event on September 27, 11:00am – 1:00 pm.
