CCC Sprint Paddler Update - Sept 23, 2021

NEWS & THINGS TO KNOW:

Calgary Council passed a bylaw in a special meeting yesterday with measures to protect residents in the fourth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, as cases overwhelm the health care system. The bylaw mandates that all businesses eligible for participation in the provincial Restrictions Exemption Program (REP) must follow or exceed the program requirements at all times.

Starting on September 23, the following businesses, entities and events must require proof of vaccination, negative test result or a medical exemption letter from patrons:

Recreation and fitness
  • Recreation and fitness facilities
  • Adult and youth (12-17) recreational sport groups (players and participants)
Information on the Vaccine Passport Bylaw can be found here:   https://www.calgary.ca/csps/cema/covid19/safety/COVID-19-vaccine-bylaw.html and includes a list of eligible and exempt businesses, FAQ’s and downloadable signage.

STAY SAFE with 2-3m apart, hand sanitizing and wear your masks.

Athletes are not to attend if:
  • In the past 14 days, they had exposure to a person with a probable or confirmed case of Covid-19.
  • If displaying symptoms or possible symptoms.

If unsure, isolate and get tested, do not attend if unsure.

As of this time all training activities take place outside.

What a great season it has been. The sprint team had a record number of participants this season as Calgarians discovered our secret paradise. Fall paddling is underway, and 70 paddlers from the summer sprint team are still hitting the water after school hours.

October 2nd is Race Day:

  • The final Alberta competition of the season is nearly here. Saturday, October 2nd, the ASRCA will hold an event right here at the Calgary Canoe Club. The event will have 200m and 1000m racing along with a 2000m time-trial event. Last Fall, CCC had 54 athletes participate in this same event, and our goal is to beat this number. CCC paddlers can do three things: 1) take part, 2) give your best on the day and 3) appreciate that they have improved by doing so. Event information is at www.asrca.com.
  • Volunteers are still needed to help with the Oct 2nd event. If you think you can lend a hand, click here.
  • Due to the event - NO regular sprint training sessions will be held. Talk to your coach if unsure how this impacts you.

Q & A for Parents:

  • An informative session for parents will be held (outside) at the Canoe Club on Saturday October 16th at 9-9:30AM, while paddlers are getting their gear ready for training. Drop off your athlete and stay for 30min to ask questions, then watch the action.

Getting Ready for Winter:

  • The sprint paddlers begin swim training even before we are off the water.
  • Swim sessions will be Sunday evenings from 6:00-7:30 PM in the University of Calgary Pool.
  • U of C and Vaccination - (click here for most up to date U of C policy) - All visitors to campus age 12 and over are expected to show:
    • Proof of fully vaccinated status (approved by Health Canada)  or
    • Proof of negative COVID-19 test: Tests must be paid for by the user, and must be Health Canada approved rapid antigen, rapid PCR or lab-based PCR test completed within the previous 72 hours from attending campus. Tests from AHS or Alberta Precision Laboratories will not be accepted.
    • How to get your proof of vaccination status
    • The Government of Alberta has identified options for how to demonstrate proof of vaccination.
    • Use the Alberta’s COVID-19 Vaccine record  system to access your card-sized COVID-19 vaccination record.
    • Paper records: you may also have received a paper immunization record at your vaccination appointment.
    • Children: Those under the age of 12 would not need to provide proof of immunization or a negative test at this time.

Winter is coming:

  • Winter programs take the paddlers into a general fitness and preparation mode. When the padders get back on the water in the Spring, we will find our team: wiser, fitter, more intelligent, more muscular, kinder, more skilled, with stronger friendships, with enhanced confidence and goal-setting skills, new personal chin up records and, and, and...
  • Winter dry land programs at the club range from a once-a-week swim with the U12 age group and progress to 9-12 sessions a week for the senior competitors preparing for Canada Games Team Camps and events, National team Selection events and the 2022 National Champs in Sherbrooke, Quebec. Programs and fees for the winter program will be posted on the website on Friday, October 8th.
This is open to any summer or fall sprint program participants. Please go here to sign up

** Our team takes pride in creating a friendly, supportive and. competitive culture. Thanks to all athletes and parents and volunteers for the effort this takes, it is worth it **
