40 Years of Driving Diversity in Journalism

Dear Maynard Family,

In a recent New York Times article, Martin connected the coverage of Gabby Petito tragedy with the systemic lack of diversity in journalism that the Maynard Institute was founded to address. There are hundreds of people of color who go missing each year, who deserve equitable attention as Petito's heartbreaking story. But majority-white newsrooms continue to struggle with disproportionately covering white people as victims, and reactionary editorial strategy compounds the issue, Martin said. Gwen Ifill dubbed this phenomenon the "missing white woman syndrome" during the 2004 Unity: Journalists of Color conference. Read the full article below.

Stay positive. Test negative.

With gratitude,

Michael Jordan and the Jordan Brand pledge $1 million to support Ida B. Wells Society’s efforts to increase diversity in the field of investigative journalism

This $1million dollar pledge is part of the Michael Jordan and the Jordan Brand’s $100million Black Community Commitment pledge to support social justice, economic justice and education and awareness.

"Acclaimed journalists founded the Ida B. Wells Society in 2016 to build the presence, profile and power of journalists of color in the field of investigative reporting. Storied New York Times Magazine investigative reporter Nikole Hannah-Jones, along with award-winning journalists Ron Nixon, who leads the global investigations team at The Associated Press, and Topher Sanders, who covers race, inequity and social justice for ProPublica, continue to steer the organization."

New York Times: How the Case of Gabrielle Petito Galvanized the Internet

The extremely tragic disappearance of a 22-year-old white woman warranted media attention across the nation. As should the disappearance of 710 indigenous people have gone missing in the past decade in Wyoming. While we feel deep empathy for the family and friends mourning Gabby Petito, it is clear the media's "missing white woman syndrome" also played a role in the amount of coverage the tragedy received.

"Martin G. Reynolds, an executive director of the Maynard Institute for Journalism Education, said he was struck by news outlets’ disproportionate attention on missing white women, a focus that he said is compounded by competitive coverage...The demographics of the industry are a big factor, Mr. Reynolds said. 'Our newsrooms don’t reflect the diversity of the country, and folks in editing roles are even less diverse,' said Mr. Reynolds..."
