Beyond The Figures: 20 years LNVH
To celebrate its 20 year anniversary the LNVH has launched the online campaign Beyond The Figures this month. The aim of the campaign is to show what the LNVH has achieved in the past 20 years and to look at the goals for the next 20 years. The campaign puts a spotlight on the key figures that worked on the advancement of women in science and sets the tone on how to move forward for the next 20 years towards a truly inclusive academic community. We are going to tell the stories 'behind the numbers', like the numbers and figures presented in the Women Professors Monitor, and demonstrate why and for whom the LNVH remains fully committed to reaching our goals.
Home base for the campaign is the instagramaccount @beyondthefigures from where we will link (in a slightly different form) to twitter, LinkedIn, the LNVH website and the newsletter. In the coming months LNVH will share relevant content every week, such as facts and figures from studies like the Monitor, interviews, interesting reads, tips to watch and relevant discussions in the media. The first interviewee will be the new Rector Magnificus of Erasmus University Rotterdam: Prof. Annelien Bredenoord.
Naturally, the LNVH wants to reach as many people as possible with the campaign. You can help LNVH achieve this by following us on Instagram and drawing people's attention to the campaign, for example by sharing our content via Linkedin, Twitter or Instagram.

Kick-off meeting 'Harassment during Fieldwork'
On Monday September 13 the online meeting Harassment during Fieldwork took place. The Naturalis Biodiversity Center and LNVH took the initiative for this meeting.
Social safety is high on the agendas within universities and research institutes. Measures are being taken in all sorts of areas, both in the field of prevention and change of culture, as well as improving reporting structures and dealing with and handling reports and complaints. However, misbehavior and harassment during fieldwork is underexposed in these developments, and requires a different approach than regular policy due to the different circumstances and conditions of fieldwork.
It has become apparent that there is a need for exchange on this subject and for actions to make targeted policy on this theme. The meeting therefore had the character of exploration and exchange. HR policy advisors dealing with social safety, diversity and inclusion, PhDs and confidential counselors talked about their experiences, bottlenecks and wishes for the future. Jerika L. Heinze, founder of The Fieldwork Initiative - a grassroots network of over 3,500 students and researchers facing trauma, unsafe conditions, or sexual harassment and assault during research fieldwork - shared her experiences and recommendations.
The meeting marked the start of a series of actions to raise awareness for and to steer towards concrete actions in policy making on the subject of (prevention and tackling of) harassment during fieldwork. If you want to be kept informed about this subject, have questions or suggestions, please contact the LNVH bureau via info@lnvh.nl.

LNVH | Mentoring requests
The LNVH supports women scientists by linking them to peers who are able to advice and support them as a mentor. This month we received one new request. We are looking forward to finding a mentor among you who can advise and support:
A mid-career female researcher in Linguistics. She returns to the Netherlands after working abroad for 7 years and would like to talk to an academic mentor to help manage the transition. She wants to avoid that a lot of time is lost on all the things that come your way when changing university and to keep the focus on her substantive goals.
Interested in mentoring this person? Or suggestions and/or tips? Please send an email to info@lnvh.nl.

Tip to watch and discuss: The Chair
|
|
At a major university, the first woman of color to become chair tries to meet the dizzying demands and high expectations of a failing English department.
This Netflix series is getting quite a few good reviews (e.g. in The Atlantic). However, it is also causing a lot of debate, see for example the following articles:
This series is now available on Netflix in the Netherlands and definitely an interesting watch!
