M+E Europe Connections Technicolor Creative Studios is launching a series of global campus locations designed to host leading VFX and production studios in co-located spaces, with new locations in Soho, London, Soho, New York and Culver City, Los Angeles, joining established campuses in Paris and Bangalore. M+E Europe Headlines IBM announced a strategic multi-year agreement with Telefónica to use IBM intelligent automation software and services to implement UNICA Next – Telefónica's first-ever, cloud-native, 5G core network platform. The Scottish technology sector is “booming” according to the UK government’s digital secretary, who has pledged to continue to invest in tech skills north of the border. Nadine Dorries, the new secretary of state for digital, culture, media and sport, made the comment as new research shows Edinburgh has the highest proportion of tech vacancies – 30% – of any UK city. The European Union is making another push to force Apple to adopt the USB-C standard in its iPhones, this time using legislation. The European Commission proposed making USB-C, with fast-charging capabilities, "the standard port for all smartphones, tablets, cameras, headphones, portable speakers and handheld videogame consoles." Wireless charging would not be included in this legal change, the Commission said, as this "is still a developing technology with a low level of market fragmentation." Digital trade is not just about high-tech firms, it is fundamental for all modern businesses. The points included plans to facilitate more open digital markets, advocate free and trusted cross-border data flows, and ensure consumers and businesses are safeguarded. The "war for tech talent" is expected to grow even more intense as businesses fast track digital transformations. ZOO Chairman, Gillian Wilmot, said the company is seeing “strong momentum” as customers launch streaming services in new territories and migrate their back-catalogue content to new formats and platforms. In addition, orders for localisation and media services relating to new titles have also expanded significantly in the past month as productions resume. The obligation on French and foreign SVoD services to dedicate 20-25 per cent of their annual turnover (for services offering films newer than twelve months) to content creation in France, could generate between €1.2 and €1.5 billion additional funds for movie and TV production between 2021 and 2024. The University of Lincoln in the UK has partnered with Microsoft to launch a first-of-its-kind cloud computing course to help give students the skills they need for a career in the digital workplace. The MSc cloud computing course will prepare graduates for professional roles such as cloud developers, solution architects and data specialists. Latest hiring survey finds demand for cloud, container and Linux skills re-bounding. Companies finally recognise these skills must be nurtured from within. But more is needed. The so-called “National Artificial Intelligence Strategy” is designed to boost the use of AI among the nation’s businesses, attract international investment into British AI companies and develop the next generation of home-grown tech talent.
