End of furlough scheme - support from HALS

The furlough scheme came to an end on 30 September. It can be hard finding a new job in a tough job market, but Haringey Adult Learning Service (HALS) - Haringey’s lifelong learning service for people aged 19 and over - is here to help.

If you have recently been made redundant, are unemployed or trying to skill up to get a better job, there are a number of courses that HALS have created to enable people to skill up, retrain and adapt to a changing job market.

Haringey Works Employment and Skills logo.HALS is also working with other council services including the employment service, Haringey Works, who are currently running drop-in sessions in many Haringey libraries. Haringey Works can help with CV creation, job search support, interview preparation, careers advice and guidance, apprenticeships, webinars and access to training courses.

You can view all available courses and enrol at the dedicated HALS website or contact the team via email at hals@haringey.gov.uk for more information.

Allergen labelling laws for prepacked direct sale (PPDS) foods

Visit www.food.gov.uk/PPDSFrom Friday 1 October 2021, the requirements for labelling prepacked for direct sale (PPDS) food changed across the UK as a new law came into force

'Natasha's law', named after Natasha Edan-Laperhouse, the teenager who died at the age of 15 on a British Airways flight from a severe allergic reaction, is aimed to protect consumers by providing potentially life-saving allergen information on packaging.

The new law applies to any food businesses that produce PPDS food including:

  • bakers
  • butchers
  • mobile sellers
  • street vendors
  • fast food restaurants
  • take away restaurants
  • schools and nurseries
  • colleges and universities
  • event caterers
  • cafes
  • pubs

PPDS food is food that is packaged at the same place it is offered to consumers. It is a single item, consisting of the food and its packaging, that is ready for presentation to the consumer before it is ordered or selected.

This may mean changes to labelling for foods such as pizza or sandwiches which are packaged on the premises before the consumer orders them. Any food business selling PPDS food will be required to label it with the name of the food and a full list of ingredients with allergenic ingredients emphasised within the list.

Food that is NOT PPDS:

  • Any food that is not in packaging or is packaged after being ordered by the consumer. These are types of non-prepacked food and do not require a label with name, ingredients and allergens emphasised. Allergen information must still be provided but this can be done through other means, including orally.
  • Food packed by one business and supplied to another business. This is prepacked food and already must have full labelling, including the name of the food and a full ingredients list, with allergenic ingredients emphasised within it.

Guidance as to how the new law affects your business and a dedicated toolkit to support local businesses have been produced by the council's Environmental Health team.

Read the guidance and download the PPDS toolkit
The video below was produced by the Food Standards Agency and explains how food labelling requirements for PPDS food changed from 1 October 2021 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Ultra Low Emission Zone expands into Haringey - is your business ready?

A further reminder that in just under 3 weeks time, from Monday 25 October 2021, the central London Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) is expanding to create a single, larger zone up to – but not including – the North (A406) and South Circular (A205).

The new ULEZ will cover ALL of the Haringey borough and will have an impact on local businesses.

The new ULEZ will operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including weekends (except Christmas Day). A £12.50 daily charge will apply when driving within, and into, the expanded zone.

Whilst 4 out of 5 cars already meet the ULEZ emissions standards, owners of the remaining polluting cars, motorcycles, lighter vans and minibuses will still need to take action before this expansion comes into effect.

The Cross River Partnership (CRP) has created Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) guidance to aid resident and business vehicle owners on the next steps to meet the emission standards (Euro 4 for petrol cars and Euro 6 for diesel cars).

The guidance provides straightforward advice and signposting for electric vehicle leasing and buying options, funding opportunities and financial incentives, as well as tools that can help in transitioning to cleaner modes of transport for personal and business journeys.

The CRP has also created a simple breakdown of the financial costs (PDF, 1.8MB) associated with continuing to drive a vehicle that does not meet the ULEZ (or LEZ) standards.

To check your vehicle meets the ULEZ emissions standards, and to view the interactive map of the zone, visit the Transport for London (TfL) website.

NFL returns to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Spurs stadium - NFLAfter a year away due to the pandemic, the NFL is returning to London with 2 games at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Atlanta Falcons will play New York Jets on Sunday 10 October while Jacksonville Jaguars take on Miami Dolphins on Sunday 17 October. Both games kick off at 2.30pm.

Throughout the day, NFL-related activities will be hosted on the High Road for fans to enjoy as they arrive for the game.

The typical NFL game day experience includes early arrival, socialising with other fans, food and drink. It is anticipated that fans will start arriving at the NFL Welcome Zone from 8.30am, so it's an opportunity for local businesses to provide breakfast sales. 12,000–15,000 fans are forecast to arrive by 10.30am for both games, and NFL fans often eat on average 4-5 times during their visit.

The Local Area Management Plan for Major Event Days including Controlled Parking Zones, road closures and parking suspensions, will be in effect on NFL game days. See all details on the NFL website.

Businesses and residents should note that due to the anticipated earlier arrival of NFL fans and installation of the NFL Welcome Zone, the timings of the local road closures will be extended compared to a normal Tottenham Hotspur home matchday.
