Just here for the boos

Tomorrow is September 22: the autumnal equinox. Or, as we like to call it: the official start of Halloween season. Over the next couple of months, we'll be bringing you all the best local haunts, happenings and fall treats – and you don't even have to knock for it. Let's get sheet-faced!

Forward this to someone who's 100% that witch.

PHOTOS VIA GIRLS GATHER TRIAD

Come to-gather right now, over us

If your favorite season is the fall of the patriarchy, you won't want to miss Girls Gather Triad's inaugural market this Saturday from 2-7 p.m. at Joymongers. GGT is the brainchild of four fierce and totally fabulous female entrepreneurs who couldn't help but notice they were all poppin' up at the same local hot spots.

  • Luiza of Wanderlust Boards curates charcuterie boards and boxes that kick your snacking experience up a notch with amazing graze. BTW, we've nicknamed her Nosh Spice because the colors of her boards spice up our lives.
  • Madalyn Yates Photography delivers "heart and soul into your brand through storytelling images," which is exactly what every empire-building businesswoman needs. And don't worry: She'll put you at ease right before she snaps.
  • Maddie of L'Avenue Boutique brings European-inspired fashion to the Triad. Her latest collection, Sicilian Getaway, is perfect for sipping Etna Rosso while munching on Slices by Tony. Or, better yet: Picture it, Sicily, 2022.
  • Dina, the self-taught baker behind Baklava & More, dishes out traditional Palestinian desserts plus an array of delectable sweets. Most of her goodies are made with dates, a variety of nuts, Nutella – basically breakfast, guys. And she's even got a special treat that lets you have your cake and eat your baklava, too.

Knowing there's power in numbers, these girls gathered to create opportunities for hustlers like themselves. (Sound like someone you know? Apply here!) GGT has several events in the upcoming months, starting this Saturday. Bonus: O.Hey will be poppin' up at Joymongers from 5-9 p.m. that day – it's a twofer! Who runs the world?

You get a rose and you get a rose

UNCG CVPA's School of Theatre presents As You Like It, a Shakespearean comedy in which (spoiler alert!) practically everyone gets happily married, Oprah-giveaway style. Grab tickets for in-person enjoyment this weekend and next, or for on-demand streaming October 14-16. All the world's a stage, especially given modern technology.

Lawn enforcement

On Wednesday, September 22, hit up Lawn Service – a new concept by Little Brother Brewing – at LeBauer Park for its grand opening. Did someone say $1 ice cream scoops all day? (Shakes piggy bank.)

Are you the keymaster?

He may not be the gatekeeper, but he is the master gate-maker. Artist Jim Gallucci will share his inspiration for the metal gates he designed for the railroad underpass at Morehead Park as part of the Downtown Greenway's Fall Art Series on September 23 at 5:30 p.m. We're told they're purely decorative, but we're sporting our proton pack just in case Gozer decides to attend.

A woman's place is . . .

. . . wherever she freaking wants. (Ours is currently at home on the couch with a pint of Häagen-Dazs.) But that wasn't always the case. On Wednesday, September 22, at 4 p.m., join UNC-Chapel Hill Professor Emerita Jan Bardsley for a virtual event that will tell you The Story Behind the Beauty: Geisha, New Women, and Social Reformers.

PHOTO VIA O.HEY STAFFER

O.Hey & chill

If you do one thing this weekend, make it this. On Saturday, September 25, from 5-9 p.m., O.Hey – hey, that's us! – will be poppin' up at Joymongers and we're looking to chill with you, in the most platonic non-Netflix kind of way. We'll have O.Hey, Joymongers and GX United swag for all, plus cornhole for chill prizes from local businesses. And we've got the raddest custom board to break in, created by AR Workshop Greensboro. Up for grabs:

  • A float from Sonder to let the weight of the world melt into the water and give you a certain kind of, ahem, afterglow – it's that good.
  • A sauna sesh from Sonder to treat yo' self with a full infrared spectrum to soothe whatever ails you. We'll take the rainbow treatment for our full spectrum of problems, please.
  •  A halotherapy session from Salt & Soul. No skills required. All you have to do is breathe and you'll feel better. You can do that, right?
  • A gift card to Lewis & Elm (because wine is always the answer to pour decisions.)
  • A gift basket from Vida Pour Tea stuffed with goodies to help you reclaim your sani-tea.
  • Three months of unlimited access to the GX United virtual fitness studio, featuring yoga, barre, meditation, kettlebells, core and more. Downward dog trumps downward spiral.
  • A fragrant candle from Scent Workshop designed to help you relax. When you can't solve your problems, take a match to them.
  • A charcuterie box from Wanderlust Boards. For an entire vibe, pair with sweatpants, fuzzy slippers and your sofa.

PHOTO VIA ALPHA-LIT TRIAD

Plus, we'll have the perfect photo-op display from Alpha-lit Triad to fit our theme: CHILL. Come take a million selfies, drink a lot less beers, mingle with us, take home some swag, and if you're a professional cornholer – or the bean bag gods happen to be smiling upon you – a rad prize!

California knows how to party

Tonight from 5-7 p.m., pop into Seagrass, a Cali-inspired home boutique, for an evening of sipping, shopping and snacking with Sonder Specialty Market. Sounds like all of our favorite activities under one roof.

Paw-ty puppies in the house tonight

Is your fetching friend one in a mule-ion? Walk Rover on over to The Sage Mule tonight from 6-8:30 p.m. for their Mule Dog Party. Win raffle prizes while lapping up drinks – all for a good cause: the ASPCA.

Abnormal is the new norm

Trevor Noah, hilarious host of Emmy Award-winning The Daily Show, brings his "Back to Abnormal" world tour to Greensboro on Friday, September 24, at 8 p.m. No funny jokes about this event because we don't hold a candle to him. We don't even hold a match to the candle.

Giving that pitch vibrato

The Greensboro Symphony is bringing you classical music twice this weekend with hints of Debussy and notes of Beethoven. (We're also taking a note from Beethoven and shall henceforth be known as O. van Hey.) Please, compose yourself because these are classy events.

We fall in fashion

We are no model citizens, but those who are will be walking the 12th Annual Restoration Runway Fashion Show at the Carolina Theatre on September 24 at 8:15 p.m. New York Fashion Week meets Broadway as local retailers showcase fall fashions, all while benefiting Restoration Place Counseling. Experience in person or at home while wearing your super-stylish sweatpants with the frayed waistband. You know the ones.

Kahlo can ya go?

Bring your budding artists to the Glenn McNairy Branch Library on Thursday, September 23, at 4 p.m. for a Frida Kahlo Self-Portrait Painting Program to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. You're Frida be you in this fun and wildly creative class! Registration required.

Everybody's got a hungry soul

Internet sensation Tabitha Brown got us all through 2020 with her recipes, anecdotes and attitude. This OG North Carolinian will be at the Carolina Theatre on Saturday, September 25, at 8 p.m. with her Feeding the Soul Book Tour. She knows what the body and soul need. We're hoping it's tacos. Please say tacos.

Alfred is our homeboy

Spooky movie season at the Carolina Theatre kicks off tonight at 7 p.m. with a Hitchcock thriller. Pack your binoculars and nab a front row seat for Rear Window.

Choo-choo on this

This Saturday, September 25, chug-a-chug over to the Lewis Recreation Center for the Best Little Train Show, a model train exhibit. It's a great way to blow off steam with the whole family.

He did the mash, the monster truck mash

How does Mike Wazowski like his toast? With Monster Jam, of course. This Saturday and Sunday at the Greensboro Coliseum, the big trucks are rollin in and rollin' over anyone who gets in their way. It's rough and dirty and, frankly, sounds like a good time.

Not a book of spells, but close

On Thursday, September 23, at 7 p.m., join up-and-coming author Benjamin Hedin at Scuppernong Books for a reading of his debut novel. Under the Spell is a haunting mystery you won't be able to put down. Pairs well with a cold witch's brew.

Oh man, you trippin'

Thinking about a little trip this weekend? Not that kind – in your car! Winston-Salem is bustling with activities to indulge in all the fall feels.

  • Gears & Guitars Music Festival cranks up the volume in Bailey Park this weekend, September 24-26. Highlights include Grace Potter, The Smithereens and Gov't Mule. And if you're a cyclist, Fastball will also be there – which is great since they know The Way.
  • If you're more books-and-writers versus bikes-and-riders, Bookmarks hosts their Festival of Books & Authors this weekend, featuring something for everyone – literately literally.
  • Take a 5k, 7-mile, or 30k run at the Salem Lake Trail Races on Saturday, September 25. We don't know about you, but we'd have a decent chance of placing if this was around Crystal Lake and we were being chased by a serial killer in a hockey mask. Theme nomination for next year, maybe?
  • Mums the word. On Saturday, September 25, from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m., the Reynolda House welcomes you to their Fall Plant Sale, featuring native beauties plus staff picks. What do you have that's hard to kill? Asking for a friend.

We're totally Athleta-ic

We love sportin' athleisure wear – hello, leggings – especially when they're pants anyone can get into. Athleta Greensboro invites you to Fall for All, a styling event celebrating the launch of their fall collection, which comes in inclusive sizes from XXS to 3X. Grab a swag bag, enter rad giveaways and mingle with local influencers @whitneywaythore, @totallychristi, @iambombshel_ and @xoxo_susel.

Will run for pizza

On Saturday, September 25, run/walk/skip/crawl your way through Lindley Park for the Miles for Matthew 5k, a benefit race that supports Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy. Finish line conveniently located a block from Sticks & Stones. Race kicks off at 8:30 a.m., so we should be at the finish just in time for lunch. Go, Team Slo-Mo!

Floating into the mystic

Fall Friday nights are for football. And paddling. On September 24, from 8-10 p.m., row-row-row your boat, rented or owned, along Lake Townsend. Sorry, but no motor-boatin'.

Switching gears

The family that rides together stays together. On Saturday, September 25, at 9 a.m., bring your ride-or-dies to King Fisher Trail for a Greensboro Mountain Biking Experience: Family Ride. Oh, shift – don't forget to register!

Hit us baby, one more Thai-me

Greensboro native Cameron Klass has been on an immersive culinary adventure, exploring authentic Thai food and culture. In her first published cookbook, Quest for Zest: Thailand, she's dishing out the flav you crave in a 100% plant-based way – hold the meat but pack the heat. If you're looking to spice up your cooking repertoire, curry up and grab your copy today!

Can we ask you something corny?

As we peruse the candy aisles of our local stores in search of the perfect Halloween treats – no, we don't want a toothbrush, Dentist Dan – it's got us pondering the age-old question. Candy corn: Does it give you a) life; b) cavities, but you eat it anyways; c) cold sweats just thinking about it; or d) just no?
