Transition Exmouth's ExeCargo
wins
Devon Climate Action Back the Future Match Funding

Devon County Council and Crowdfunder have teamed up to find green initiatives who are responding to the climate emergency.  Transition Exmouth's ExeCargo is one of seven projects chosen to get a portion of £30,000 in match funding from Devon County Council. "The deadlines are very tight, " said Carol Jay, who is leading on the fundraising , " but it's too good an opportunity to let is slip.  We have just a few weeks to raise the first £1,000 through  Crowdfunder  - then DCC will chip in another £1,000, plus there's a 40% grant for e-Cargo bikes from the Energy Saving Trust .  We can treble the money we raise , and that's our first community eCargo bike ! Surely Exmouth people will rally round and support this brilliant project?"

Local businesses, community groups and residents will all be able to use ExeCargo for deliveries, transporting sports equipment, doing the school run, or the shopping; the possibilities are endless! How could you use ExeCargo ? Could you help us with a pledge , or by publicising the crowdfunder to your family and friends?

ExeCargo: the Pilot

In December 2020, we launched a pilot e-cargo bike delivery project, with £500 funding from a Transition Network Bounce Forward  National Lottery grant.   Exmouth Cycles did us a brilliant deal on bike hire,  Exmouth Town Council chipped in to brand the bike, and some amazing volunteers started pedalling.  In March 2021 ExeCargo was born.

We learned a lot in the three month trial , and saved a whopping 90,000 kg of carbon dioxide emissions, as the deliveries would otherwise have been done by petrol or diesel vehicles.  Mother Earth told us, "ExeCargo is brilliant ! We don't do enough deliveries to justify buying our own e-cargo bike , so being able to use this a couple of times a week is perfect".

ExeCargo: the Future

Exmouth Indoor Market  also used the eCargo bike during the trial, and they have kindly made a stall available to us. They will allow us to store the bike on our stall, along with advertisments for the ExeCargo opportunities.
Initially bookings will be managed by Exmouth Cycles . Longer term , ExeCargo bookings will be integrated into Ordaloca,  a website and app which promotes Near Commerce and enables customers to order and "shop locally like it's 2022".   Ordaloca is being developed by Propeller Exmouth , a not-for-profit co-working space with a community of start-ups, creatives and engineers.  Manager Jim Hill told us , "Our ambition is to provide a powerful utility for the future of running local businesses, and a part of that means creating the space for local e-delivery companies to use the platform too. So we’d love to get involved  and help you out however we can with ExeCargo".

Having an e-Cargo bike for use by local businesses, groups  and individuals enables them to make their collections & deliveries in a more eco-friendly way.  There is long term potential for self-employed delivery riders to use the e-Cargo bike instead of a car.  This project supports the development of the green economy in our town.  Supporters of ExeCargo can claim rewards of free hire time on eCargobike.  We are eligible for match funding up to £5000, with Energy Trust funding available for up to five bikes , so we could end up with a whole fleet!

ExeCargo: Now

The more people support ExeCargo, the better chance we have of going on to the next stage of BacktheFuture funding, so any amount is very welcome.  Our Crowdfunder mentor tells us that the best people to ask initially are existing supporters (that's you ... )  and their family and friends (you know who they are ....)

#ONESTEPGREENER Green Ambassadors scheme.
Nominations close 3rd October

Do you know someone who really takes climate change seriously and is going above and beyond in their local community to affect change? Perhaps they organise litter picks or are very involved with ecological projects. Maybe they are involved with a local food project or it’s a local business that have really upped their game relating to reducing waste.
Maybe it’s someone who you know has made big strides in their own life to reduce their environmental impact.
As part of the events leading up to COP 26 the UK government are running a climate ambassadors programme and are looking for everyday people who are doing their bit to tackle climate change. The aim is that these actions no matter how small will inspire others to get involved and collectively we can have a big impact.
So if you know someone or even if you want to nominate yourself then please check out this webpage and fill in the form
#ONESTEPGREENER - Together For Our Planet (ukcop26.org)

"We  should all nominate someone or even nominate yourself – I know that feels a bit cringe but no one will have time to nominate you plus they need all your details, otherwise I might have done it all for you!" Catherine Causely , EDDC's Climate Action Officer , told us recently . "It’s a good way of raising the profile of the work you do, plus it will give you a voice at COP26. Plus wecan get some great EDDC social media posts from it ! Go on, do it. It only takes 10 mins to fill in the form !"

COP26 - What do we need ?  What can we expect?
Report and SW COP Events by Transition Exeter,

The latest report from the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) is grim reading.  'Code Red for Humanity'.  Estimates say that without better policy offers from many countries, we are on target for a global average of 3 or 4 degrees of heating - leading to unimaginable grief and suffering as parts of the globe no longer support humans and tipping points are crossed which could drive the process further.

The COP needs to
  • listen to the scientists rather than representatives of the Fossil Fuel companies who will be present
  • end investment in new fossil fuels . Even the industry body the IEA says opening new oil and gas fields is incompatible with 1.5 degrees.
  • Have scaled up 'Nationally Determined Contributions' - plans for cutting greenhouse emissions - especially from high emitting countries - diplomatic cadging is already under way but it is not clear how successful this will be
  • Attend to the remaining carbon budget; reliance on net zero target dates (as with the UK pledge to reach net zero carbon by 2050) can lead to using up the remaining carbon budget for 1.5 degrees within a few years.
  • Provide the promised $100 billion a year to developing countries to adapt to inevitable climate change and build low carbon economies instead of using coal, oil and gas.
A speaker from Extinction Rebellion International Support Network said 'We find this process insulting'.  Richer countries are in effect saying they will continue causing climate change, without reparation for loss and damage to climate vulnerable areas suffering the most harm already; and have defaulted on their promised climate finance to poor countries to adapt and decarbonise.  Some nations including UK have even been taking climate finance out of existing aid budgets - it was supposed to be in addition - and some of it is in loans, increasing the indebtedness of poor countries, already escalating under Covid19.

What to expect?  The signs from the G7 are not good. No mention there on a date to end coal-fired power; no clear plan for 1.5 degrees or to limit new fossil fuel investment..Re-iterated promises on the $100 bn without commitment to delivery. International and national campaigns will be lobbying for this to change.  A good start would be for UK to walk it's talk!  Both the Committee on Climate Change and the Office of Budget Responsibility say policies are not in place to fulfil UK promises to reduce climate emissions.
FAIR COP: from Climate Crisis to Climate Justice

Climate disasters are being reported every day, from all parts of the world. The UN COP26 international meeting takes place in Glasgow in November. As part of the Great Big Green Week (http://greatbiggreenweek.com/) this workshop will help you navigate the very large number of climate teaching resources available; consider how to make a positive climate-response to the 4 Cs: Campus, Curriculum, Community and Culture; and share and co-create local opportunities to tackle this crisis.  More details here

Join us on Zoom. To register, email us at dde@globalcentredevon.org.uk
