WHEN THE SMOKE DESCENDS
GOOD WEATHER ENDS

  Becky's Comment

Welcome to the September edition of Smoke Signals.

The month saw our first RYA Diesel course take place at our Dumbarton centre in Scotland, well done to Rod!
Meanwhile the team “Down South" are working hard on next year's programme and dates are already online for RYA Sea Survival, RYA First Aid, RYA Diesel and Outboard Maintenance. As the nights will soon be getting longer we are now turning our attention to navigation night school, which you can read about below.
RYA Day Skipper & Yachtmaster Night School

Join us throughout November, December and January for RYA Day Skipper or Yachtmaster Nightschool. You start your course with a full weekend and continue with 1 weekly evening throughout the winter months. Nightschool benefits from no time off work, as well as making use of the dark winter evenings. It's a relaxed, slow paced, friendly environment delivering bitesized chunks of information.

RYA Day Skipper Shorebased:
  • Sat 13th & Sun 14th Nov (all day)
  • Tuesday evenings from 16th Nov - 18th Jan with a break over Christmas
  • Sat 6th & Sun 7th Nov (all day)
  • Wednesday evenings from 10th Nov - 19th Jan with a break over Christmas
  STCW Elementary First Aid

This STCW Elementary First Aid (EFA) course is designed for those professional yachtsmen, super yacht crew and seafarers who are required to comply with the STCW '95 code of practice and the STCW 2010 amendments. In the super yacht industry this certificate is required by all crew. In the smaller yacht and the workboat industry skippers operating up to 60 miles from a safe haven can operate with this certificate. It is valid for 5 years and can be used towards a RYA commercial endorsement.

Essentially, if you were at sea and a member of your crew became seriously ill, somebody on board should have sufficient skills to perform adequate first aid until professional help can be reached.

Our next date is Tuesday 19th October.
