Weekly Update

Scripture of the Week

Luke 11:9-13

“So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. 11 If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? 13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”

Back to the Basics Encouragements

The Work of the Holy Spirit

As we see God move more and more in our services, as we encounter the fullness of His love, presence, and power, we must remain grounded in our encounters.  When I say grounded, I do not mean limiting what God can do.  Often when the Spirit of God moves, He can create discomfort because He is wholly unfamiliar to us.  He will do things that are not on our grid because the Holy Spirit is God.

The grounding I am talking about is to make sure that we have a clear foundation to be fully open to receive the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives and corporately in our gatherings.  With that in mind, I am hoping that simple Biblical teaching on the manifestation and the work of the Holy Spirit will keep your heart postured to step into the unknown and receive the gift of empowerment that was promised to all who would believe in His name.

This is from our basic doctrinal statement that you can find at https://hvwc.com/more-about-us/.
  • We believe that God sent His Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost: Acts 2:1-4. Holy Spirit baptism is for ordinary men and women that choose to make Jesus the Lord of their life and is for today: Acts 2:38. The Holy Spirit was sent to convict the world of sin and to be a paraclete (companion, comforter, teacher) to those who believe in Jesus Christ and are disciples of Him:  John 16:7-15. The Holy Spirit’s work can be seen in the believer through the changed life and manifestation of the Fruit of the Spirit: Galatians 5:22-26.

  • We believe in the manifestation of the gifts of the Holy Spirit that were experienced in the New Testament church because the Baptism of the Holy Spirit is for today. Luke 24:49; Acts 1:3-8; 2:36-38; 8:12-17; 10:44-48; 19:1-7.  Jesus was clear as were the apostles that all believers were to experience the Baptism of the Holy Spirit and that as many gifts as are given by the Spirit should be received and operate in a healthy community of believers, John 7:37-39; 1 Cor, 14:1-5. We believe that Scripture gives us the best outline for the function and roles for each of those gifts 1 Cor. 12 - 14.  Spiritual Gifts are to edify the Church and the individual as an outworking of love and to be a sign to the non-believer always glorifying and lifting Jesus Christ as Lord 1 Cor. 12:1-11.

We do have a list of distinctive doctrines on the outworking of spiritual gifts, including prophecy, tongues, signs, wonders, healing, and miracles.  Along with that, we also have a helpful sheet that discusses the common myths about speaking in tongues.  We want you equipped to experience all that God has for you, and we want the God of the universe that has cleansed you from sin, to empower you to live righteous lives that model the life of Christ, and the Apostles' lives today in the power of the Holy Spirit.
