People of color and immigrant families have been particularly impacted by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, including the 10.4 million undocumented immigrants living in the U.S. Undocumented immigrant workers lack of access to healthcare, ineligible for many government relief payments, and experience job instability. In New Jersey, there are still barriers to accessing essential services for treatment and testing of COVID-19 for immigrants.
For example, even though the USCIS announced that the “public charge” rule is no longer in effect, the chilling effects on immigrant families remain palpable; many of immigrants still avoid public programs. Without paid sick leave and proper healthcare, immigrant workers are among those who have to choose between going to work and exposing co-workers and customers to infection or going without pay for weeks.
Join the Center for Cooperative Media this Friday at 2 p.m. ET as we speak to Nedia Morsy of Make the Road NJ about these and other impacts that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on New Jersey's immigrant communities.
