David Skinner, a gifted and highly regarded member of NERSC and the high performance computing community for more than 20 years, passed away unexpectedly in late August. David's can-do spirit and his many contributions to both research and the Berkeley Lab community will be sorely missed.

The Berkeley Lab’s ISO 50001 implementation team won a 2021 U.S. Department of Energy Sustainability Award for its innovative approach to the subject.

Former Alvarez Fellow Named SIGHPC Emerging Woman Leader

Berkeley Lab’s 2012 Luis Alvarez Fellow in Computing Sciences Didem Unat was named the 2021 ACM SIGHPC Emerging Woman Leader in Technical Computing.

A new quantum crystal possibly capable of sensing elusive dark matter is one of the research projects being supported by the Berkeley Lab-led Quantum Systems Accelerator.
The ALS has honored a team of accelerator physicists and computer scientists, including CSA's Dani Ushizima, with the 2021 Klaus Halbach Award for Innovative Instrumentation. The team used machine-learning techniques to solve a long-standing problem with third-generation light sources: fluctuations in beam size due to the motion of insertion devices.
DOE Early Career Research Program applications are now open. Mandatory pre-applications are due October 21.
Cheer on CSA's own Lisa Claus as she competes in the Lab's SLAM competition finals at 3 p.m. on Sept. 23.

Great work by our summer student Tirthak Patel, together with the quantum compiler team at @LBNLcs developing robust and very resource-efficient quantum circuit approximations with 30-80% fewer CNOTs, combined with "dissimilar" randomization.
