A message from Team SWIGS

Hello! As the new SWIGS executive team, we are delighted to welcome everyone to the new academic year 2021-22. We hope you are all safe, healthy, and ready to embark on this fall term. Continuing with the great work done by the past SWIGS teams, we are planning an interesting line up of academic and social events to enhance our graduate school learning experience and foster connections among water researchers in the university. As the university gradually moves from a virtual work-life to in-person activities, SWIGS is also transitioning to host in-person events whenever possible respecting the University and the Region of Waterloo guidelines. Our biweekly newsletters will inform you about the upcoming events and updates from the Water Institute. In the meanwhile, if you have any ideas for events or if you would like to be involved in SWIGS, please don’t hesitate to reach us (uw.swigs@gmail.com). Looking forward to an exciting year of learning and connecting with you all!

Scholarship Proposal Peer-Review Workshop

Are you applying to federal or provincial scholarships this season? SWIGS and WCC is hosting a graduate scholarship proposal peer-review workshop over Microsoft Teams to help you advance your scholarship application. Commencing at 4:30pm (EST) on October 7th, the 90-minute workshop will
1) provide brief overview of self- and peer-evaluation strategies facilitated by the Waterloo Writing and Communication Center (WCC), and
2) foster informal peer-evaluation and group discussions in break-out rooms with like-minded peers.
Please be prepared to share your research proposal (it may be in any stage of your writing process) to enable the peer-evaluation process. This is a great opportunity to get feedback from fellow graduate students across all faculties!

Workshops and Events Survey

SWIGS is currently planning to host a diverse range of workshops and social events for this upcoming school year. With most university activities going virtual, we are considering different ways to engage the graduate student community online and we would like to hear and incorporate your suggestions in this year’s programs. Please complete the SWIGS Workshops and Events Survey and let us know what interests you.

The SWIGS Executive Team would like to announce that the following candidates (profiles below) have expressed their interest in the currently vacant roles of Vice-Chair Conference (Kevin White) and Vice-Chair Social (Rodrigo Curty  Pereira). Please let us know if you have any feedback regarding these appointments.

Kevin White

Vice-Chair, Conference

Hi everyone, I’m Kevin, a second-year PhD student in the Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences and a member of the Groundwater Geochemistry & Remediation Research Group where I work on novel analytical techniques to assess remediation strategies for contaminated mine sites. I’ve had a chance to meet and chat with many of you over the last year while serving on the SWIGS Executive Team as the Collaborative Water Program Liaison, and now I’m interested in continuing with SWIGS for another year in the Vice-Chair Conference role. I have a great deal of experience in organizing conferences and workshops – from campus Toxicology Symposiums during my BSc, to the national Canadian Ecotoxicity Workshop and student events at the SETAC North America annual meetings during my MSc – and strongly believe I would be an excellent candidate for the position. Despite the challenges imposed by the pandemic and the transition to virtual events over the last year, I had a great time at last year’s World Water Day, and I’m excited to work towards hosting another great event and trying out some new things this year!

Rodrigo Curty Pereira

Vice-Chair, Social

Rodrigo Curty Pereira is a PhD student in the Department of Geography and Environmental Management. His research focuses on the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on communities that have limited access to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) in Brazil. There's nothing he likes more than just spending quality time with his friends. As SWIGS' Vice-Chair Social, he expects to help building a sense of community among the students in the Water Collaborative Program, across all faculties and cohorts

We are continuing to host a weekly virtual writing café on Thursdays 3:00 – 5:00pm EST on Microsoft Teams.
