Oral Health Needs in the WIC Program

In June 2021, the National WIC Association released an oral health position paper about the oral health needs in the WIC program.  Except for Medicaid, oral health services are largely unfunded for families who lack dental insurance or the ability to pay out-of-pocket.  The National WIC Association urges state and local agencies to work with their department of health and other stakeholders to develop plans for action to improve the oral health care for their participants.  To learn more about their needs, please access their position paper below.

Final Report of the
Integration Partnership Project

For the past 3 years, the National Maternal and Child Oral Health Resource Center, with assistance from the National Network for Oral Health Access, supported the Partnership for Integrating Oral Health Care into Primary Care (PIOHCPC) project. The purpose of the project was to improve access to oral health care by integrating the interprofessional oral health core clinical competencies into primary care. The PIOHCPC project teams consisted of a state oral health program, addressing the Title V national performance measure (NPM) on oral health, NPM 13, and a local primary care setting.

Teams from Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, and Rhode Island participated in the project. The publication, The Partnership for Integrating Oral Health Care into Primary Care Project 2019-2021: Final Report, provides information about the implementation of the PIOHCPC project, details project findings and strategies to integrate oral health care into primary care, and highlights technical activities provided to and feedback received from project teams. The project was funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration, Maternal and Child Health Bureau.

Register Now for the
2021 OPEN National Meeting

Registration is now open for the 2021 OPEN National Meeting, “Building the Future — Together!” happening October 20 to 22, 2021. This three-day, hybrid event will be held both in-person (St. Louis, MO) and virtually, and is an opportunity to connect, learn, share, and network with some of the nation’s best change agents, advocates, and leaders at the forefront of oral health progress and equity.

Take advantage of several learning opportunities at the 2021 OPEN National Meeting. As Network members continue to get acquainted with the “OPEN Blueprint for Structural Improvement” (the Network’s new strategic plan), we’ll be joined by Damon Centola, a leading expert on social networks and behavior change.  He is the author of Change: How to Make Big Things Happen, a bold and paradigm-busting new theory about the complex way ideas and behaviors spread, and how to efficiently affect the change you want to see in the world.

Additionally, learning opportunities include:
  • Results, recommendations and resources from the Network’s equity assessment process
  • Updated messaging and framing resources
Facilitating the safety and well-being of attendees is a primary concern of meeting designers who have established several guidelines and protocols to facilitate in person attendance including requiring all in-person participants to be fully vaccinated by October 18th, mandating mask wearing in all indoor spaces, implementing no-touch and low touch processes, and providing socially-distance seating options. In addition to the opportunities described above, in-person participants will also have access to:
  • Participate in reverse site visits and learn more about St. Louis and the surrounding areas
  • Attend a Network reception sponsored by OPEN, Inc.
Learn more about this event and register here.
