THIS WEEK IN KĀPITI – 14 September 2021

Te Wiki o Te Reo Maori was launched in 1975. In September of each year we celebrate the day the Maori Language Petition was put before Parliament. The main purpose of Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori is to enable the public to elevate and celebrate the Māori language.

So, friends, the challenge has been laid; this is to encourage all of us to speak the Māori Language, no matter whether a little or a lot, at work, at home, in your communities, at night, all of the time, everywhere.

Nau mai ki te wiki o te Reo Māori!

It’s Māori Language Week! You can find out about why te Reo Māori is important to Council on our website. We’re practising things like answering the phone – why don’t you give a try, too? You could say “Kia ora! Ko [name] tēnei” – Hello! This is [name]”.

Also coming up at midday today, 14 September, is Māori Language Moment – you can help Aotearoa New Zealand set the world record for people speaking and celebrating an endangered, Indigenous language at the same time.

Enjoy Māori Language Week, and karawhiua – give it a go!

Remember the Alert Level 2 rules

Thanks for playing it safe when visiting our libraries, pools and services centres.

We’re going to be at Alert Level 2 for another week so this means we need to continue to limit the number of people we have in our buildings to help ensure physical distancing is maintained; this may mean you experience some delays. Please be understanding, and respect the Alert Level 2 guidelines.

Everyone aged 12 and older is required to:

  • scan in, or keep a personal record of their visit
  • wear a face mask at all times.

Let's continue doing a great job Kāpiti!

Getting ready for growth

We've been working on planning for the future and thinking about how Kāpiti should grow.

In the coming weeks we’ll be asking for your feedback on both a proposed approach to growth in Kāpiti and an updated Open Space Strategy.

There are lots of crossovers and interconnections between the two and it makes sense to discuss them together.

They cover things like where and what sort of new houses should be built in Kāpiti, and how we make sure we have the open space we need to protect the lifestyle we love.

Consulting under COVID-19

Council uses a variety of channels to give you a choice of ways to have your say on important issues like the Representation Review.

Under heightened COVID-19 alert levels we can’t hold face-to-face events or collect submissions at offices, so you may have noticed printed copies of the consultation document with a Freepost address inserted in your local paper.

Now we’re at Alert Level 2 we’ll also put copies of the document and submission boxes in our libraries as usual, but we always encourage you to submit online.

Remember to have your say on our Representation Review.

Requesting information from Council

Need information from the Council? Our online tool Have Your Say has a ‘Questions’ button at the bottom of the consultation page for you to fire through requests. We do our best to respond as quickly as possible.

Usually, it’s just a case of pointing people to information which is already on our website. But if your question – or the answer – is complex or requires time to collate a response from non-public sources we treat it as an official information request (or LGOIMA).

Our response times for official information requests are governed by legislation. It gives us 20 working days, but that’s a limit, not a target – we’ll respond as soon as we can. We publish requests and responses on our website for others who want the same information.

Read more on official information requests.

Traffic Bylaw consultation extended

We've extended consultation on our draft Transport Bylaw 2021 (formerly the Traffic Bylaw) until 24 September.

We know working and schooling from home and all the other challenges COVID-19 alert levels bring can make additional 'mental bandwidth' harder to find - so we've added a few extra days for you to have your say.

The Bylaw covers the rules around things like parking, walkways and cycleways, signage and roadworks on Council-owned or managed roads, public carparks, reserves or any other public place.

Love Local, love to eat out

Show your support for our local eateries by boycotting your kitchen this week and heading to your local faves for a meal or two (or three!).

When heading out, remember to wear your face mask and to scan or sign in on arrival. Of course, if you've become accustomed to the comforts of home there are loads of takeaway options too.

While we're lucky to be in Alert Level 2, it's far from business as usual. Show your support by loving local. Join the Love Local movement on Facebook.
