Welcome to New Students

The Wales DTP is delighted to welcome 58 students joining us this year across our pathways. As a student of the Wales DTP, you are joining a vibrant postgraduate community that thrives on exploration and discovery. DTP training and student development resources and events will help you to make the most of your PhD journey, building the skills and capabilities needed for a wide range of careers. The DTP Microsoft Teams space is our on-line hub, hosting training events, student discussions and sharing of resources across our 20 pathways. Student reps and the DTP Team stay in touch through Teams, as well as our monthly newsletter, published in Welsh and English. You can also get in with touch us via email and Facebook or follow us on Twitter. We look forward to working with you all in the coming year. Congratulations and welcome to all! Welsh Government Child Performance Policy

Research from Wales DTP student Chloe Reid (Education, Cardiff University) has recently been published by the Welsh Government. In Spring 2021, Chloe completed a 3-month internship project with the Welsh Government as part of her collaborative studentship. The findings of her resulting report, entitled 'Lessons learnt from interviews with child performance professionals and policy recommendations' will feed in to Welsh Government policy on child performance. UK Data Service Introductory Training Series

The UK Data Service, which provides access to a wide range of social science data for reuse, runs free introductory level training events every spring and autumn to introduce different aspects of its service. This autumn, a series of webinars and workshops will cover topics including finding and accessing data, large scale social surveys, how to anonymise qualitative and quantitative data, and data management basics. The series begins on 5 October with a webinar introducing the UK Data Service. For a full list of events and bookings visit the UK Data Service website.

NCRM Research Methods E-Festival

Registration is now open for the 2021 Research Methods e-Festival, which will be held online on 25-29 October. The e-festival will feature more than 80 sessions, including webinars, keynote presentations, expert clinics and workshops. Sessions will cover a diverse range of subject areas, from virtual reality experiments and podcasting, to social network analysis and methods for dementia research.

The e-festival is being jointly organised by NCRM and methods@manchester and will take place on an interactive digital platform that includes live video streams, community discussion areas and a poster presentation space. Wales Centre for Public Policy Internship Opportunities

The Wales DTP is delighted to offer three 3-month internship opportunities with the Wales Centre for Public Policy, starting in January 2022. The projects available are: The Wellbeing of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015: Implementation and Evaluation; The role of evidence in policy making; The use of policy tools in Wales in implementing change. These internships are open to any ESRC Wales DTP funded student (except those within 3 months of the start or end of their studentship). Successful applicants will receive a fully-funded extension to their PhD equivalent to the duration of the internship.

Wales DTP Induction 2021

All new ESRC Wales DTP funded students commencing their awards in October will be invited to take part in our induction programme this autumn. Through online materials and a series of live virtual sessions with DTP staff and invited speakers, new students will be given the opportunity to find out all about being an ESRC-funded student and the opportunities available. Further information will be circulated to new students shortly.

Congratulations!

Congratulations to Wales DTP students Jake Wilkinson and Richard Saunders (Social Policy, Cardiff University) on their recent successful applications for a Welsh Government internship. Both internships will commence in October for a period of three months, working on a project looking at climate change evidence synthesis.

Call for Papers: Creativity, Disability and Diversity

The call for papers is now open for 'Creativity, Disability and Diversity: A creative representation of lived experiences of the move to a more digital world due to the Covid-19 pandemic'. The event, a digital exhibition of creative expressions from individuals, groups and organisations, takes place on 3 December to mark the UN's International Day of Disabled Persons. The organisers welcome creative contributions in a range of formats suitable for digital display including images, written poetry or prose, spoken poetry or prose, or music. Wales DTP Small Grants

Despite the current situation, there is still plenty of potential and support for the submission of applications for DTP small grant activities, and to plan collaborations that can be done virtually. We welcome proposals for our next small grant applications call with a closing date of 1 November 2021. Further information and an application form can be found on the DTP website.
