NSF Announcement
New Science and Technology Centers to Address Vexing Societal Problems - NEW!

The U.S. National Science Foundation announces six new science and technology centers to advance ambitious, complex research in fields ranging from mechanobiology to particle physics to climate change. For decades, NSF science and technology centers have transformed cellular biology, combined scientific disciplines to enhance accelerator capabilities, and revolutionized real-time functional imaging by providing the ability to observe the activity of a single atom. The centers will focus on establishing new scientific disciplines and developing transformative technologies that have the potential for broad impacts on science and society. The six new science and technology centers include: NSF Center for Chemical Currencies of a Microbial Planet, NSF Center for Integration of Modern Optoelectronic Materials on Demand, NSF Center for Learning the Earth with Artificial Intelligence and Physics, NSF Center for Oldest Ice Exploration, NSF Science and Technologies for Phosphorus Sustainability Center, and NSF Center for Research on Programmable Plant Systems.

DOOS: Deep Ocean Observing Strategies for a Predicted Ocean, September 16, 2021 - NEW!
The Deep Ocean Observing Strategy (DOOS) seeks to bring together deep ocean networks and Decade programs that span ocean observing, exploration, modeling, and management communities, particularly early career researchers. Explore current gaps/challenges and future opportunities in deep ocean observing in four interactive panels that will foster discussions across disciplines within and outside the research community. Panels include both current and future leaders of the Deep Ocean Observing Strategy (DOOS) who will explore future directions in deep ocean observing – societal needs and scientific gaps, coordination between deep sea biologists and modelers, and the future of tech in the deep. IODP-USSSP: Apply to Host the "In Search of Earth's Secrets" Exhibit in 2022 - NEW!
The In Search of Earth's Secrets Project uses the JOIDES Resolution research vessel and her science to intrigue, engage, and inspire informal science audiences across the nation. These well-designed and facilitated opportunities at museums and libraries in carefully selected locations aim to provide an effective mechanism for increasing STEM learning access among underserved minorities, rural populations and girls, and create a broadly applicable model for doing so in other science fields. Apply to be a new Community Site Partner and host this traveling exhibit in 2022. Community teams consist of three local representatives from these organizations: a Girl Scout council or similar youth-focused organization, the public library system and/or a museum or science center and a project manager, who may be a part of one of those organizations or a related one. Teams will work together to plan, facilitate, and evaluate the project locally but will also be contributing to a multi-year, national project. Deadline for applications: September 24, 2021.

C-DEBI Virtual Meeting Series: Towards a More Holistic Understanding of Mentoring Best Practices, October 1, 2021 - NEW!
Our next virtual meeting features Marisela Martinez-Cola (Morehouse College) who will present "Collectors, Nightlights, & Allies, Oh My! : Advice for Strengthening Cross-racial Mentoring Relationships" on Friday, October 1, 2021 (10:30AM - 12:00PM Pacific Time). The virtual meeting series is held monthly during the first week of each month, with a regular rotation of science workshops and professional development workshops. Each workshop will contain about 90 minutes of programming, including invited speakers to give plenary tutorials and presentations, breakout icebreaker and discussion sessions, and plenary Q&A sessions. Register in advance for the meeting on October 1, 2021.

Carnegie: Postdoctoral Fellowships in Earth and Planets Laboratory - NEW!
The Carnegie Institution for Science invites applications for postdoctoral fellowships at the Earth and Planets Laboratory in Washington D.C. Carnegie Science emphasizes interdisciplinary observational, experimental and theoretical research in fields including astronomy, cosmochemistry, data science, geodynamics, experimental petrology, geobiology, geochemistry, geophysics, mineral physics, planetary science and volcanology. Carnegie scientists conduct research in these and related fields in the general quest for improved understanding of the origin and evolution of Earth and planets, including the fundamental physics and chemistry of materials. University of Wyoming: Assistant Professor in Organic Geochemistry - NEW!
The University of Wyoming invites applications for a tenure-track, Assistant Professor in Organic Geochemistry in the Department of Geology & Geophysics and the interdepartmental Program in Ecology and Evolution. The successful candidate is expected to build a strong extramurally funded research program using organic geochemistry approaches to investigate Earth systems. This search is partially supported by a 5-year, $20 million NSF EPSCoR RII Track-1 grant to the University. The project focuses on examining microbial life and its ecological consequences and has enabled the university to hire other faculty with related interests. The successful candidate will benefit from the project's scientific outcomes and infrastructure, such as new ICP-MS and Orbitrap LC-MS instruments, and will contribute to the project's institutional capacity building in the candidate's area of expertise. The Department of Biological Sciences at Lehigh University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the level of Assistant Professor. For this position, we seek outstanding applicants studying fundamental processes related to the molecular and cellular biology of bacteria or archaea, or their viruses, including but not restricted to host/viral interactions, microbial interactions, biofilms, toxin/antitoxin systems, mechanisms of antibiotic resistance, or microbial communities/ecosystems. University of New Hampshire: Postdoc Position in Marine Microbial Biogeochemistry - NEW!
The Ziervogel lab at the University of New Hampshire (UNH) is seeking a highly motivated postdoc to conduct research in the field of marine microbial biogeochemistry related to a multi-institutional project funded by NSF’s Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR). This ongoing project aims to further our understanding in microbially-mediated cycling of organic matter in the ocean, combining biogeochemical tools with single cell genomics. The work is a collaboration with Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences, ME, the Desert Research Institute, NV, and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. This 2-year postdoc fellowship targets recent PhDs or current postdocs from MSIs in the United States or its territories. Application deadline: December 8, 2021.
