WELCOME

Greetings! We're excited to share some great resources and let you know about a few events you won't want to miss. Happy reading!

Announcements

Our next meeting will be held
September 24th from 12 to 1 PM ET on our Zoom line!

Meeting password: 123

At this months meeting, we will listen to the Columbia Energy Exchange podcast featuring Climate Scientist Dr. Kate Marvel for her interpretation of the UN Intergovernmental Panel On Climate Change's new climate science report.

Kate doesn’t have “hope” that we can slow climate change and transition away from fossil fuels, but she has something she says is better: Certainty that we have knowledge, tools and technology we need today to start decarbonizing rapidly.

MiCCA member Andrea Ketchum will be doing a short demonstration on the group library she developed for the MiCCA website at the meeting as well!

MiCCA would like to celebrate Andrea Ketchum who has a Masters degree in Library & Information Science and Health Information Management. Andrea  is graciously sharing her expertise to develop an online group library which will be housed on MiCCA's new website.

We're so lucky to benefit from Andrea's NIH/NLM Fellowship in Medical Informatics from Pitt’s School of Medicine. Andrea explains that because MiCCA is focused on action, members need information and data to support evidence-based decisions. She understands the technology and the various “free to read” rules to make qualified research articles easily available online as quickly as possible.

Projects she has been working on include 1. an online environmental research library; 2. environmental data resources; 3. infographic or data visualization tutorials and resources.

Andrea will do a short demonstration on the group library at our upcoming meeting, make sure not to miss it!

Thank you again for all the work you do for MiCCA Andrea!

Educate

Editors from more than 200 medical journals warn that if we bypass more than 1.5°C of global warming it could be 'catastrophic' for health:
Human health is already being harmed by the climate crisis, and the impacts could become catastrophic and irreversible unless governments do much more to adress global warming, the editors of more than 200 medical journals said in a joint editorial Monday.
The editorial points to established links between the climate crisis and a slew of adverse health impacts over the past 20 years: Among them are an increase in heat deaths, dehydration and kidney function loss, skin cancer, tropical infections, mental health issues, pregnancy complications, allergies, and heart and lung disease, and deaths associated with them.

Cynicism is a hardening, a calcification of the soul. Hope is a stretching of its ligaments,
a limber reach for something greater.
