Synod 2021-2023, “For a Synodal Church: Communion, Participation, Mission”
Bishop Malesic will celebrate an Opening Liturgy for the Synod on Sunday, October 17 during the 10:30 am Mass at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. This will kick off the diocesan phase of the three-year synodal journey of consultations and discernment, culminating with the Assembly of Bishops in October 2023 in Rome.
A leadership team has been formed to plan and implement the synodal process within the diocese. Through the end of the year, all baptized Catholics will be invited participate in this process of listening, dreaming, and discerning God’s call for the Church amid the present signs of the times. This is National Migration Week
The USCCB has designated September 20-26 National Migration Week. Pope Francis chose the theme "Towards an Ever Wider 'WE'" for the Vatican's culminating celebration of the World Day of Migrants and Refugees (WDMR) on September 26. The Pope reminds us that “this focus calls on us to ensure that ‘after all this, we will think no longer in terms of ‘them’ and ‘those,’ but only ‘us’’ (Fratelli Tutti, no. 35). And this universal us must become a reality first of all within the Church which is called to cultivate communion in diversity.” Read the Pope's full reflection and find prayers and intercessions here. Urgent Support Needed to Welcome Afghan Refugees
Catholic Charities' Migration and Refugee Services (MRS) continues to prepare for a significant increase in refugees from Afghanistan. The MRS office needs the community's support to assist them in welcoming our newest neighbors through donations of household goods, financial support or time for volunteering (finding rental units, mentoring newly arrived families, and taking refugees to get state identification cards at the BMV). Available affordable housing is especially sought to provide decent rapid housing upon arrival. Donations for financial support can be made directly on the Catholic Charities website. October is Respect Life Month
To help build and celebrate the culture of life, the Office for Human Life, in collaboration with the Diocesan Social Action Office, will highlight a different aspect of life each week: abortion, death penalty, adaptive needs, human trafficking and end of life issues. A media kit for parishes and schools is available on our website.
You will also find a list of resources that promote education and advocacy on the sanctity of human life here. Join us in our mission to be proper stewards over the gift of life that God has given us.

Most Holocaust history focuses on countries with strong anti-Semitic sentiment prior to WWII that enabled the destruction of their Jewish people. Much of that destruction was actually carried out by the local populations, not just the Nazis. Yet, exhibiting compassion and humanity, Italians saved most of their Jews despite pressure to comply with the Nazi plan, supported by Mussolini, to annihilate them. How did Italians rise above the atmosphere of hate?

CLE 21:6 - Diocesan Youth Conference
January 8, 2022, 10am-9pm

CLE 21:6 is a day-long event to ignite high school teens in their faith and to gather in fellowship as the young Church. Exploring Matthew 21:6, "The disciples went and did as Jesus had ordered them," CLE 21:6 will help launch teens into following Christ and living as missionary disciples. Tickets on sale now. Cost is $35.
Teens must attend with a parish or school group, and cannot buy tickets individually. Tickets can be purchased by a youth minister, campus minister, or parish group leader. (You will not need names of individuals attending until November.)

Go and Make Disciples: Cohorts Forming!

The Office of Missionary Discipleship is launching discipleship formation cohorts that will meet for six sessions. During these sessions, we will engage small groups in prayer and formation with a focus on nurturing a relationship with Jesus Christ, collaboration opportunities, and strategic planning for forming communities of missionary disciples in your parish and region. New Funding Available for Climate Projects
The Victory Noll Sisters Small Grants Program offers grants of up to $1,000 to seed sustainability and climate justice projects inspired by Laudato Si’. Catholic parishes, dioceses, schools, religious communities and other Catholic organizations are eligible! The priority deadline to apply is October 14th, 2021. If funding remains thereafter, grants will be awarded on a rolling basis until the funds are exhausted.
Activities that could be funded include:
- Advocacy and dialogue with church and political leaders on our call to care for creation and our vulnerable neighbors
- Support for events (educational events, rallies, fairs, festivals) that connect to Season of Creation, Feast of St. Francis, Earth Day, or any of the seven Laudato Si’Action Platform goals.
- Participation in existing creation care events with the intention of lifting up the Catholic voice within them
- Prayer services and liturgies related to creation care
- Retreats, workshops, or forums to promote understanding, bridge-building, and healing related to creation care
- Service projects (tree-plantings, cleanups, community gardens, etc.)
- Classroom instruction/curriculum related to creation care

Did you Know?
On September 20th we celebrated the feast of St. Andrew Kim Tae-gŏn (21 August 1821 – 16 September 1846), the first Korean-born Catholic priest and the patron saint of Korean clergy. St. Andrew Kim, the lay apostle Paul Chŏng Ha-sang and over one hundred other men, women and children of the Korean Catholic community were martyred during anti-Catholic persecutions in the 19th century. They were canonized on May 6, 1984. In our diocese, St. Andrew Kim Korean Pastoral Center in Tremont is the spiritual home for Korean Catholics of northeastern Ohio.
