The EEF Balkan Equestrian Championships: seven countries participate in the 2021 edition at the Markopoulo Centre in Athens

The Balkan Championships, after five years, return to Greece and will be held for the third time at the Olympic Equestrian Centre in Markopoulo. After the great success of the Athens Equestrian Festival 2021, the Olympic Equestrian Center in Markopoulo will in the same year host the EEF Balkan Championships 2021 in two equestrian disciplines, Jumping and Dressage.

The EEF Balkan Jumping Championship will be held on the Olympic Grass Arena from 16 to 19 September, while the EEF Balkan Dressage Championship will take place from 17th to 19th of September on the sand arena.

The Balkan countries of Bulgaria, Turkey, Romania, Serbia, Croatia, Cyprus and of course Greece will participate with about 180 riders and horses.

In Jumping, athletes with their horses will claim the gold medals in the individual and team competitions of the classes Children, Juniors, Young Riders, Amazons and Seniors, and in Dressage the medals of the classes Children, Juniors, Young Riders and Seniors.

Regional Championships such as this play a central role in sports to serve as stepping-stones to the next level of European Championships, World Championships and Olympic Games. Prior to any global aspirations, athletes and teams need this preparation so that they can gain experience, have benchmarks and set goals - first at a regional and then continental level - and that is exactly what this EEF Balkan Championships does. As for the fans, there is nothing like nation versus nation rivalry to establish national pride for sporting heroes and partnerships.

The experience gained at such championships is invaluable; it is an opportunity to see partnerships rise to the occasion and work as a team to deliver the best possible performance for their country.

The competitions are conducted according to the approved Health Protocols of the two sports, while spectators are allowed to enter up to 60% of the capacity of the two stadiums.

The event is supported by the Greek National Federation and respective sponsors, the Attica Region, under the auspices of which the BEC is organized, over to the Municipality of Markopoulo and the Public Real Estate Company.

EUROPEAN EQUESTRIAN FEDERATION
The EEF (European Equestrian Federation) was founded in 2009 with the aim of addressing the issues of the equestrian sports at a European level. Formally established in February 2010 with the adhesion of 27 National Federations (NF), including Italy, the EEF began to work with the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) to increase the influence of  European nations within the FEI which, at the 2018 General Assembly, unified the FEI I and II groups within the EEF Group. 2015 saw the start of a partnership between the European Equestrian Federation and Longines - the title sponsor, timekeeper and official clock provider of the Longines EEF Series. The EEF currently includes and represents 38 European National Federations.

THE BALKAN CHAMPIONSHIPS
Balkan Championships go back to 1968, when they took place for the first time in Istanbul, Turkey. It is the Balkan Equestrian Council (hereafter BEC) formed by eleven member National Federations that is the founding body of it. All  of these member NFs are FEI members and 10 of them are EEF members and are representing an important geo-political European Region as the Balkan countries cover 16% of European territory and make up 20% of the European population. The current members of the BEC are: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, North Macedonia, Moldova, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia and Turkey.

The EEF Balkan championships are one of the main sport events at the Balkan Region and are held in four equestrian disciplines: namely Jumping, Dressage, Driving and Endurance. EEF Balkan Equestrian Championships are organized with a minimum of four participating countries. There have to be a minimum of three teams and a minimum of eight individuals per category to be considered a championship. It is its 58th edition that is going to be held in Athens. Greece, from September 16 to 19 2021.
