Civic Holidays - Remember to vote at Nov. 2nd, 2021

Asian Media Access has been part of voter mobilization effort, and we hope to utilize the "Civic Holidays" idea to better engage with Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) voters. Civic Holidays are nonpartisan days of action that strengthen and celebrate our country’s democracy! Each holiday has different ways that YOU can get involved!

a. National Voter Registration Day - Sept. 28, 2021
Every year on the holiday, organizations such as nonprofits, campus groups, libraries, election offices, businesses, digital platforms, and many more participate in a coordinated day of action to register as many voters as possible.

b. National Voter Education Week - October 4-8, 2021
National Voter Education Week will share resources in equipping new voters with the voter education tools they need to grow our democracy.

c. Vote Early Day - October 23, 2021
Vote Early Day will provide resources to start a grassroots event, share messages across social media, recruit poll workers, or get involved with larger events locally.

d. Election Hero Day - November 1, 2021
Election Hero Day recognizes the important work and contributions of poll workers, election administrators, and clerks to ensure efficient and secure elections.

Civic Holidays provide voters, particularly first-time voters, with steady engagement to ensure civic responsibility is immersed to people's minds, while also helping to minimize those administrative problems that can arise when people wait until the last minute to register, learn about what's on their ballot, find their voting location, and vote. Proactively informing voters about their options through civic holidays is a win-win for everyone.
Please join AMA to connecting AAPIs with the information we all need to become and remain civically engaged, and ensuring that our elections are more inclusive and secure.

Supporting Mental Wellness among Asian American Children and Youth.

Since last year, Asian American and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) have been suffering a double crisis - pandemic and anti-Asian hates.  According "Stop AAPI Hate" issued last month a national report (https://stopaapihate.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Stop-AAPI-Hate-Report-National-v2-210830.pdf) indicated a total of 9,081 incident reports from March 19, 2020 to June 30, 2021. The number of hate incidents reported increased from 6,603 to 9,081 from April to June of 2021. Of all incident reports, 4,548 hate incidents occurred in 2020 and 4,533 of hate incidents occurred in 2021.

AAPI Youth (0 to 17 years old) reported 9.9% of incidents and seniors (60 years old and older) reported 6.9% of the total incidents. Chinese have reported more hate incidents (43.5%) than all ethnic groups, followed by Koreans (16.8%), Filipinx (9.1%), Japanese (8.6%) and Vietnamese (8.2%).  Physical assaults increased from 10.8% of the total hate incidents in 2020 to 16.6% in 2021. Vandalism increased from 2.6% in 2020 to 4.9% in 2021. Online hate incidents increased from 6.1% in 2020 to 10.6% in 2021.

According to a recent study "COVID-19 Racism and Mental Health in Chinese American Families" by Dr. Wang, it shows that Chinese American parents’ perceptions of being direct victims of racial discrimination both online and in person were associated with their children’s self-reported anxiety and internalizing problems. Moreover, parents’ perceptions of Sinophobia were associated with their children’s self-reported externalizing problems, again highlighting the links between collective racism and externalizing problems in youth. Parents’ own racial victimization experiences might impact their children’s mental health either directly or indirectly through increased stress, a hostile family environment, and/or more negative parenting.

The results suggests that 18.7% to 23.91% of the youth had a slightly elevated to substantial risk of clinically significant mental health problems; these percentages are higher than the US norm, in which 10.9% of 15- to 17-year-olds and 14.3% of 11- to 14-year-olds have similar scores.  Asian Media Access has great concerns of the wellbeing of our AAPI children and youth, and have encouraged AMA youth to created storybooks for their younger siblings to honor the cultures, enhance self-esteem, at the same time to demystify the racially motivated hate toward AAPIs.

One of our youth, Ariel Xiong has created a storybook entitled "Why I am different" with colorful illustrations to share a Laotian boy's journey visiting his grandparents in Laos, later how he becomes proud to share his cultural heritage after coming back to the US, a heart-warming story that can empower many Asian American children.

Asian Media Access will continue to publicize other youth's works. Please check more stories through our Youth In Charge blog - https://blog.youthincharge.org/

PLACE: North Mississippi Regional Park, 5116 N MISSISSIPPI Dr, Minneapolis, MN 55412, Register https://bit.ly/AMAJPMA

This past year, our communities have been engaged in conversations about how we keep each other safe. With the murder of George Floyd by the Minneapolis Police and the rise in anti-Asian violence, what does it look like for us to build a public safety system that truly keeps us all safe? Join us on October 2, from 12 - 4pm, for a conversation about reimagining public safety as Asian Americans. We will engage in discussions around our relationships with policing, the issues we face around keeping each other safe, and take an opportunity to reimagine what safe communities look like. We will also learn more about the opportunity in Minneapolis to vote for a new department of public safety. There will be art, food, and real conversations about building real systems of safety in our communities. Bring a friend! This event is organized by the Asian Minnesotan Alliance for Justice, a collection of Asian Minnesotan organizations fighting for solidarity and justice in Minnesota.
