Helping Students Succeed

Onboarding in online courses has been considered a predictor of student success. If you are teaching online and are not familiar with this concept, we invite you to listen to a group of expert online teachers across the country explain and reflect on this concept. And, of course, the CLT can help you with questions you may have about these topics:

Launching a Successful Semester (25 minutes)
More on the Onboarding Process (20 minutes)
Building Strong Relationships with Your Students (28 minutes)

Room and Equipment Reservations

CLT facilities follow the COVID 19: UH Mānoa guidelines, which apply to all operations and activities on campuses and at off-site facilities and include appropriate social distanced seating, capacity limits, and disinfectant cleaning prior to use.

Please access the CLT Reservations page to view current COVID-related guidelines for our facilities or to make a reservation.

Can we help?

The CLT is offering a communication channel for users to contact us remotely. On the website, look for the chat icon at the bottom right of the page. Click to open, then submit your question or request. Staff will be monitoring incoming messages to assist users directly or will route the request to appropriate personnel. Our help line is useful for questions about CLT online events, Zoom functions/dysfunctions, Laulima, and other learning resources in the Center and on campus.

Recording Studio

Did you know that CLT has a soundproof recording studio? UH Mānoa faculty and staff (as well as external users) have used it to create language teaching audio materials, public service announcements, and more.

To book the studio, see our CLT Reservations page. For information on the audio services CLT offers or assistance with audio files (MP3 preferred), please contact Robert Wong.

Project-Based Language Learning Summer Institute

From August 4 to August 11, the Tech Center hosted an 8-day in-person Intensive Summer Institute - Designing Project-Based Language Learning (PBLL) Experiences. Following the successful completion of the Envisioning PBLL Online Workshop in Spring 2021, a selected number of participants joined this Intensive Summer Institute, including teachers and directors from The Language Flagship and other programs sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense, such as Project Global Officer and the Language Training Centers, as well as colleagues from the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center. At this Intensive Summer Institute, participants continued building key knowledge in PBLL teaching practices and started planning for implementation in Fall 2021 and Spring 2022.

The institute opened with a unique mini-PBLL experience where participants joined in a guided tour at the Hawaiian Plantation Village and created language learning activities for children of Chinese heritage to engage them in a fun and educational tour at the museum. These activities will be published online as part of the Hawaii’s Plantation Village Activity Book.

Second Language Research & Practice: Call for Submissions

If you conduct research on postsecondary language teaching and learning, the American Association of University Supervisors, Coordinators, and Directors of Language Programs (AAUSC) encourages you to submit your work to its peer-reviewed, open-access journal, Second Language Research & Practice. Published annually in the fall by the National Foreign Language Resource Center, the journal's aim is to address postsecondary language education from theoretical, empirical, and practical perspectives through the publication of research papers and reports. Second Language Research & Practice accepts submissions on a rolling basis at any time of the year. However, for publication in the current year’s volume, priority will be given to submissions received by January 15 (e.g., for publication in Fall 2022, we prioritize submissions received by 1/15/2022). Submission details are available at http://www.slrpjournal.org
