Exhibitions
Tides Institute & Museum of Art
Maine Bicentennial Book
As part of Maine’s Bicentennial, the Tides Institute & Museum of Art mounted an exhibition of works from its collections ranging in date from 1820 to the present. In addition, the Tides Institute will publish a Bicentennial book featuring 100 works from its collections and the stories behind the works and how they came into the Tides Institute’s collection. Each week, one of the selected works will be featured in CulturePass.
This week’s piece is a watercolor of Grand Manan Island, New Brunswick by New Brunswick artist, Jack Weldon Humphrey. It dates to perhaps 1950. Grand Manan was part of the disputed coastal border territory between the U.S. and what is now Canada that was largely resolved by the Webster Ashburton Treaty of 1842. The treaty placed Grand Manan with Canada (then Great Britain). Humphrey was one of the most significant painters in eastern Canada during his day. He was born in Saint John, New Brunswick in 1901, studied at the school of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League in New York City. Afterwards, in 1929 and 1930 he travelled to Europe including studying in Paris, France and in Munich, Germany. Returning to Canada, he visited Vancouver, British Columbia on the Canadian Pacific coast in 1933 and then travelled south to Mexico in 1938. In 1933, Humphrey was a founding member of the Canadian Group of Painters. He taught at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario in 1951 and that same year received an honorary doctorate degree from the University of New Brunswick. From 1952 to 1954, he painted in Paris on a Canadian Government-Royal Society Overseas Fellowship. Humphrey extensively portrayed his hometown of Saint John, the city’s streets, people and waterfront, over many years and these paintings established his importance as an artist. A retrospective exhibition of his work was organized in the mid-1960s at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery in Fredericton in New Brunswick and the exhibition toured throughout Canada. He died in Saint John, New Brunswick in 1967. This watercolor was acquired by the Tides Institute from Galley 78 in Fredericton, New Brunswick in 2009.

through September 28
Lauren Luloff and Alex Nolan (shown) will be the featured artists at the Mulholland Gallery in Lubec from September 9 - 28. Opening reception will be on September 11 from 5 - 7 pm.
Luloff layers collaged fabric and paint onto bed sheets, creating delicate yet expressive paintings. For Luloff, the sheets reference “home, intimacy, dreams, and drama” and imbue her works with a host of formal qualities, “their crumpling acting as an impasto swoosh, or creating chiaroscuro,” she says. “Patterns from the sheets offer a harder edge line in contrast with my organic brush marks.” See more of her work here.

From Maria: "In my six years as an independent artist, I have emphasized carved decoration on porcelain surfaces. I have experimented extensively with Sgraffito, a technique in which I carve into dark-coloured surfaces.
Recently, I have integrated birds of New Brunswick in my decorative work. I visit natural areas to observe the birds in their natural habitats. My new interest led me to investigate bird anatomy, flying styles, and plumage coloration. I discovered that several of my favourite birds are listed as species threatened or at risk of extinction."
