Be sure to stock up on some of these last days of summer produce before we move into the cooler weather crops, which are beginning to make their way to the market. Each season’s bounty is full of new nutritious possibilities. We’d like to say a special thank you to the CATS Special Transport team for helping us provide handicapped accessible shuttles last Saturday for our patrons from a nearby senior apartment community - a great help to improving nutritious food access!
Mark your calendar for upcoming Children’s Activities in September! We’ve been excited to see all the activity around our Children’s Tent over the past weeks as we strive to provide engaging educational experiences to help our youngest patrons learn about healthy nutrition, farming, and sustainability.
September 18 - Guest Instructors from Arts +
We’re thrilled to host Arts + this Saturday, a Charlotte leader in providing artistic instruction for all ages and backgrounds. They will bring professional art instructors to the market for some creative and fun art projects. These activities will take place between 8:30am - 12:30pm so be sure to pass the word to friends and family for a
special family experience.
September 25 - Mint Museum Collaboration with Artist Curtis King
The market will partner with the Mint Museum to bring muralist Curtis King back to the market. Based on the Mint Museum Uptown’s upcoming exhibition featuring the art of Impressionist Artist Leslie Breck, Artist Curtis King will provide a live painting
demonstration between 10am - noon while the children are given the opportunity to show
their own artistic talents. The Mint Museum will provide art kits to the children and
museum passes to the exhibit for families.

COVID-19 Protocol: Please continue to socially distance at vendor tents and take advantage of the market’s three hand-washing stations. We’ll have plentiful sanitizers at all the vendor tents. Mask mandates are back for indoor places, so we can all appreciate the opportunity to shop for the freshest produce, meats, and artisan foods at an outdoor farmers market. We will stay vigilant on CDC protocols for outdoor gatherings, but please wear a mask if you feel more comfortable. We’ll continue to work together to get past this pandemic and keep one another safe.

From Charlotte Culinary Expert, Heidi Billotto
This Sunday Sept 19 is National Cheeseburger Day! You'll find lots of great local ground beef, pork or chicken options to craft your burgers, but when it comes to the sides, look to the last of the season's okra and tomatoes for fun homemade ketchup and fries. When you are frying the okra follow this simple rule to make sure your oil is exactly the right temperature. I call it, Heidi's Wooden Spoon Rule: To test to see if the oil is hot enough for frying, place a wooden spoon in the pan of oil. As the oil heats, little bubbles will form around the edge of the spoon just as they would if a piece of food were in the pan frying – when you see the little bubbles, the oil is hot enough to fry. To fry with less fat, use a non stick pan and coat lightly with a flavorful olive oil. Brown as you would in the greater amount of oil.
Cheers,
Heidi
