Italian Ambassador visiting Bjerknes
Last week, we were honored to have the Italian Ambassador Mr. Alberto Colella (Ambasciata d'Italia a Oslo ) visiting Bjerknes, together with scientists from R/V Laura Bassi coming in from the #CASSANDRAproject expedition to the Arctic.
We linked up online with our close colleague in Italian polar research, professor Carlo Babante (of CNR Istituto di Scienze Polari), and enjoyed talks by early career scientists presenting exiting new findings, and good discussion on future polar collaboration between
the Bjerknes Centre and our Italian polar partners. The Cassandra project contribute to the Synoptic Arctic Survey, with the goal of creating a comprehensive Arctic Ocean data set. (Read more about SAS here: https://synopticarcticsurvey.w.uib.no/.../the-cassandra.../)

Art+Science= True
I was invited by artist Susan Schuppli to contribute to a video artwork in the context of an exhibition currently open in Bergen Kunsthall called “The Ocean”, where we have a conversion about art and science. The theme of the exhibition is the ocean and the environment.

From top left:
Therese Rieckh is Austrian and a postdoctoral fellow at GEO. Her field is Atmospheric and climate science. Her main research theme at BCCR is Polar.
Allesandro Craparo is a new scientist at GFI. He is from South Africa and has a degree in bioclimatology. He will be affiliated with the Climate Hazards research theme.
Marie-Lou Bachelery from France is a postdoctoral fellow at GFI. Her field is regional coupled modellingand climate predictions, and her affiliation will be the Global research theme. She will be working on climate – ecosystem predictability in the tropical Atlantic.
Yue Ying from China is a researcher at NERSC, and his field is data assimilation. He will also be a part of the Global research theme at BCCR.
More new members to be presented in the next Bjerknes Times!

The Portrait
Name: Øivind Bergh
Position:
Principal Scientist, IMR, the Oceanography and Climate group.

Education:
Dr scient in General Microbiology, UoB
Background:
I have been working a long time on various aspects of aquaculture, in particular environmental impacts and diseases. In recent years I have focused on Marine Spatial Planning, particularly with focus on aquaculture, spreading of diseases and the potential to develop the industry. I have participated or led a range of EU projects in this field, which led me to my present work.
What is it you do exactly at work?
I am still involved in several projects, right now in particular the new SFI “Smart Ocean”, where my role is to lead the integrated field experiments, putting together new sensors with underwater communication in an “Internet of underwater things”. This is a large and very multidisciplinary project, where my main focus is to contribute to develop this to serve aquaculture and environmental monitoring and to serve other offshore industries with some emphasis to the present buildup of marine wind and offshore aquaculture.
Why climate research?
The impact of climate change on fisheries and aquaculture has gained considerable interest. There is no doubt that these industries, which are crucial to feeding the world, will be greatly influenced by climate change. I have been involved in two EU projects here: CERES and ClimeFish, and wish to further develop that work. Studies on the impact of compound events in the coastal zone or near-coastal waters, including marine heat waves will contribute to the future management of marine and coastal human activities of which aquaculture is crucial.
What extracurricular activities do you have?
Culture (music, theatre), mountain hiking, political work, and working for my trade union.
Do you have a favourite song, band or artist?
I clearly prefer the classical side, and to be just a little patriotic: the Bergen Philharmonic!
Your favourite food?
Seafood, in particular the Norway Lobster (sjøkreps) and King crab.
The best and worst about Bergen?
I am a native, thus not very objective.
The best: and old “city culture”, which is uncommon in Norway
The worst: we locals tend to get involved in endless fights about everything, completely unable to make decisions

PhD-Forum hunts mushrooms
After some rainfall last week, mushrooms have been popping up everywhere around Bergen. A perfect opportunity for the PhD Forum to socialize outdoors! Last Wednesday, over 30 participants joined a mushroom hunt in Kanadaskogen. In the beginning, Xabier gave a brief introduction on how to recognize various kinds of edible mushrooms, then it was time to explore the forest! With some great teamwork and searching skills everyone ended up with filled baskets. As an extra safety measure all mushrooms were checked by an official ‘Soppkontroll’. Cooking tips were exchanged before heading off to a well-earned dinner.

The Bjerknes PhD Forum is open for all PhDs affiliated with the Bjerknes Centre.
The Forum intends to create a community for international and Norwegian PhD students from different research areas during their time in Bergen.
Our aim is to facilitate exchange among new and advanced PhD students as well as to distribute and preserve knowledge about “the way things work”.
We meet about once a month to network and discuss different aspects of the academic career and/or life in Bergen. Visiting PhD students and interns are welcome to join our activities.
The current PhD Forum board members are:
Vår Dundas (leader) - var.dundas@uib.no
Anna-Marie Strehl (co-leader) - anna-marie.strehl@uib.no
Jakob Simon Dörr - jakob.dorr@uib.no
