Dear <<First Name>>,
View from the Study
‘Doubt is a thief that often makes us fear to tread where we might have won.’ (Shakespeare)
September is always the most exciting, and challenging, part of the school year. Ambition and aspiration meet nerves and novelty: children and adults quickly readjust, as the long summer days start to fade and the routine of the school day becomes familiar once again.
This year, of course, the routine is more welcome than ever, and we encourage the children to be brave, to tread where we might win. We welcome all those that are new to Belhaven, pupils and staff alike - two and a half weeks in, veterans all.
As I write, we are looking forward to the first PTFA meeting in almost two years and to a New Parents’ lunch, and then a weekend out for everyone to take stock of what has been a very busy, happy and successful start to Belhaven’s 99th year.
Best wishes.

Winter Sports Fixtures Return! |
With Regular Rugby & Hockey Fixtures |
It goes without saying that the decision to keep parents away from school fixtures remains a considerable source of frustration. The children are enjoying getting back into the rhythm of regular fixtures, and we continue to do what we can to persuade the authorities to change their minds!
The girls’ hockey season got off to an excellent start last Saturday with some fine performances against Strathallan. These were swiftly followed by a further test against Loretto and so rapid progress is being made.
The rugby fixtures against Loretto were a great success and, in beautiful sunshine, some good skills were on display at this early stage of the season. Read more in the Sports reports.
On the afternoon of Saturday 25th September, we will be travelling south to Barnard Castle to take part in their hockey and rugby tournament. We have been invited to bring our Under 12 Girls and Boys teams and will stay overnight before the tournament on Sunday before travelling back in the evening. This is a fantastic opportunity for the children, and, as it is in England, parents are warmly invited to watch the games on Sunday. I do appreciate that it is quite a journey... |

Introducing Mr White: The New Boys’ Boarding Housemaster |
In the middle of August, we welcomed Jack, Vicky and Rosie White to Belhaven to take over the boys’ boarding house. They have made an immediate impact on the school and you can learn a little more about Mr White and his family in this short video. |

Try an Instrument Day |
|
Mr Ellison and his brilliant band of VMTs (Virtual Music Teachers!) composed a wonderful opportunity on the first Saturday of term, with all those in Form 2 and below able to have a free lesson on 13 different instruments.
The event showed the great variety of musical options on offer here and the children’s willingness to explore new instruments. This is exactly the kind of attitude we want to encourage.
Please do keep an eye out for concerts, either at Belhaven or at one of our ‘Music from Belhaven’ events. |

The Belhaven Dog Show |
Thank you so much to the Campbells and the PTFA for organising drinks at Keith Marischal and the Dog Show last weekend.
We raised £1412.46 for Riding for the Disabled in Scotland on Sunday - an incredible testament to the hard work involved in setting it all up - and we are looking forward to forging stronger links with the Drum in the future.
Belhaven has also been in touch with our friends in Kabul as we continue to try to create a connection between Belhaven and Friends of Aschiana.
We have embryonic plans to host a major event at Belhaven at the end of the Spring term to build the children’s awareness of how they can influence change following COP26 – watch this space... |

Congratulations To... |

…Izzi D and Silver, who won the National Schools Equestrian Association (NSEA) competition for her age group during the summer holidays, just before starting Belhaven. She has also won the qualifiers in the Arena Eventing and Showjumping at Grassroots and Open (75cm), qualifying for the National Championships this October at Hickstead.
Her success has inspired us to join the NSEA and we will be looking to enter equestrian events as a school in the near future.
…Hugo J on recent golf and skiing success – Hugo came 4th in the national drive, chip and putt championship. He was also 6th in the National Skiing championships Under 14 category, held recently at Hillend.
…Harry B, who collected the Bemersyde award for the biggest salmon caught by a junior on the Tweed in 2020 this week. The trophy now has pride of place in the dorm! |
