Open for business!

We were delighted to welcome the Mayor & Deputy Mayor of Sutton, and Cllr Ruth Dombey to our official launch of our new office at Market House in July. A big thank you to Carole Baker, our volunteer photographer, who kindly took photographs at this event.

New project: Sports Buddy Sutton

We are delighted to announce the launch of Sports Buddy Sutton, a new project from Sutton Befrienders, our award-winning, volunteer-led befriending programme.

This project will enable people with mild to moderate physical disabilities or those with learning difficulties and/or autism to undertake mainstream sports activities by the help of a volunteer ‘buddy’.
Sports Buddy Sutton is funded jointly by Comic Relief and the Mayor of London.

September Volunteering

This month our volunteering theme is "back to school". With the start of school, many families are starting new routines, and young people may be looking to volunteer and add some experience to their CV and/or UCAS application. Our latest newsletter, which goes to over 1,500 residents, has a wide selection of volunteering opportunities open to those aged 16-18 years, as well as several new roles open to adults of all ages.

We are also delighted to be hosting our next Volunteering Drop in Day for the general public on Thursday 30 September at The Sound Lounge. We are offering physical and also virtual bookable slots. Our Drop in Day will run until 6pm to enable school and college students to attend. For more info about our Drop in Day...

Working with NHS Sutton

Over the summer, Volunteer Centre Sutton has continued to work in partnership with NHS South West London to support the Covid-19 Vaccination Programme.
Our volunteers have visited residents door to door across the Sutton Borough to answer any questions about how and where they can book their Covid-19 Vaccination appointment, providing any information and support that they may need to access the vaccine.

We have also managed volunteers to attend engagement events such as the Vaxi Taxi event.

Expanding our team of Volunteer Advocates

This month we've recruited and trained a further 5 Volunteer Advocates to support our MAPS Advocacy work.

MAPS Advocacy provides an independent advocacy service for Looked After Children, care leavers and children subject to child protection proceedings aged 8+ in the London Borough of Sutton.

Wallington Community Wellbeing Charity’s Information and Advice Day

On Friday 10 September colleagues from our Sutton Befrienders team attended Wallington Community Wellbeing Charity's Information and Advice Day. It was lovely to be back at this annual event for the first time since October 2019.

As always, it was a fantastic opportunity to chat to the public and other organisations to find out about other services available in the borough to support older people and vulnerable adults.

Job Fair

We were delighted to partner for this event attended by over 150 residents. Members of the public could drop in and speak to companies about potential employment and training opportunities, as well as speaking to us about volunteering opportunities and how volunteering can support employment and career development. The next job fair will be held on Thursday 21 October.

Sutton Population Health Summit

On Thursday 16 September colleagues from our Volunteering Development Team, our MAPS Mentoring team and our Sutton Befrienders team attended the Sutton Population Health Summit, organised by NHS Sutton's Primary Care Networks. The themes for the day were "Shaping the Future of the NHS" and "Working with Our Neighbourhoods".

Vote for MAPS in the Tesco Community Grant Scheme!

We're delighted to be in the customer vote for a Tesco Community Grant. It's a scheme which gives community projects like us grants of up to £1,500. Tesco customers will vote in selected stores across Sutton during October, November and December to decide how much funding we get. We will be using our grant to take our MAPS mentoring pairs on a go-karting day out.

Welcome to our new Trustee

We're delighted to welcome Neil Davies as a new addition to our Board of Trustees. Neil's first voluntary role for Volunteer Centre Sutton was as one of our Nonsuch Vaccine Site volunteers. Find out more about our Board...
