Young people's recommendations for digital mental health services
Young people from across Sussex have made recommendations aimed at improving digital mental health services in a new report.
The report, the “Pan-Sussex Children and Young People’s Mental Health Digital Review”, is based on the experiences and perceptions of young people who shared their views in a survey and took part in a number of events over the summer. The survey aimed to identify gaps in digital provision of Children and Young People's mental health and emotional wellbeing services (age up to 25) in Sussex and to find out from young people how services could be improved.

World Patient Safety Day
This year’s World Patient Safety Day on Friday 17 September focuses on safe and respectful childbirth. The World Health Organisation is highlighting how the majority of poor outcomes are avoidable through the provision of safe and quality care by skilled health professionals working in supportive environments.
To mark the day Helen McElroy, Consultant Neonatologist, Oliver Fisher Neonatal Unit, Medway Hospital and Neonatal Lead for Kent Surrey Sussex Patient Safety Collaborative, has written this article, which highlights some of the MatNeo initiatives taking place across our region.
And Natasha Swinscoe, patient safety national lead for the AHSN Network, has written a blog looking at some of the improvements already being made, and how inequalities in maternal and neonatal care are being tackled.

Patient Safety Congress 2021
Along with all the AHSNs, we'll be featuring the work of our Patient Safety Collaborative (PSC), delivering the national safety improvement programmes, at this year’s Patient Safety Congress.
The event – which is being held in person at Manchester Central and online, on 20/21 September – brings together teams from across the country with leaders, patients and innovators in patient safety.
Six AHSNs have also been nominated for HSJ Patient Safety Awards, which will be announced at a ceremony on the evening of Monday 20 September.

Kent and Medway Ruby ward consultation
An NHS consultation on a proposal to relocate the last remaining dormitory style mental health ward in Kent and Medway is entering its final weeks.
The consultation sets out a plan to relocate Ruby Ward from Medway Maritime Hospital to a new purpose-built unit on Kent and Medway NHS and Social Care Partnership Trust’s (KMPT) Maidstone site. The new unit would offer 16 single ensuite rooms, along with lots of space inside and out for patients and visitors, as well as dedicated areas for therapy to help people recover as quickly as possible.

Finding a genomic cause: the clinician’s role
As greater numbers of clinicians refer patients for genomic testing through the NHS Genomic Medicine Service (GMS), the Genomics Education Programme recognises the need for educational resources to support with this transition. The actions taken, and information provided, by referring clinicians is crucial to laboratory scientists as it is used to apply various filtering stages when looking for a diagnosis.
The Genomics Education Programme has developed a new resource: Finding a genomic cause: the clinician’s role, to show how laboratory scientists whittle down the genomic variants identified by genomic sequencing to find a diagnosis for patients and show how the actions of the referring clinician impact this process. This new resource breaks down the variant filtering process and has a useful list of FAQs, as well as signposting to other related resources.

Measuring business contribution to health
Business for Health (B4H) and the Confederation of Business Industry (CBI) are engaging the business community to design a Business Index to measure business contribution to health and promote the role of business in creating a healthier nation - recognising that health is the foundation for wellbeing and economic growth.
Building on CBI’s report, Seize the Moment: How Can Business Transform the UK Economy, B4H and the CBI are working together to provide practical ‘how to’ information to help businesses improve their contribution to population health and get ‘Health’ into ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) frameworks to guide innovation and investment in sustainable health.

Data for healthier lives and reducing inequalities
The All Party Parliamentary Group for Longevity (APPGL) is inviting contributions to the Open Life Data Framework which aims to make it easier to collect and connect data to help people stay healthier for longer and to reduce health inequalities.
The Open Life Data Framework is a recommendation from the APPGL’s document, The Health of the Nation Strategy, which set out key recommendations to meet the government goal of five more years of healthy life expectancy by 2035, while reducing health inequalities.
The Open Life Data Framework will help researchers, policymakers and entrepreneurs determine what types of data can be shared and connected to help individuals keep healthy while enhancing overall health resilience at a population health level. It will explore how the exposome of complex exposures from multiple determinants of health (such as diet, housing, air quality, physical activity, and social interactions) can advance healthy longevity research and practice.

Build Back Better
The government has published a new paper, Build Back Better, which sets out its new plan for health and social care. It provides an overview of how it will tackle the elective care backlog in the NHS and put the NHS on a sustainable footing.
It describes the plan for adult social care in England, including a cap on social care costs and how financial assistance will work for those without substantial assets. It covers wider support that the government will provide for the social care system, and how the government will improve the integration of health and social care.

AAC plans third wave of rapid uptake products
The Accelerated Access Collaborative (AAC) is planning the next launch of RUPs in April 2022, which will support up to four products or ‘workstreams’.
The AAC’s latest briefing on FutureNHS summarises its work to help system leaders identify how it can work with their teams and share examples of best practice in its workstreams.

Call for new NIA Fellows opens
The NHS Innovation Accelerator (NIA) - an NHS England and NHS Improvement initiative supported by England’s 15 Academic Health Science Networks (AHSNs), hosted at UCLPartners - has launched the call for its 2022 cohort of Fellows.
The national accelerator is open to local, national and international health and social care innovations supported by passionate individuals from any background, including SMEs, clinicians, charity/third sector and academics.

Applications invited for latest SBRI competitions
SBRI Healthcare, in partnership with the AHSN Network, have launched two new competitions focused on ‘Mental Health Inequalities in Children and Young People’ and ‘NHS Reset and Recovery’.
1. Mental Health Inequalities in Children and Young People
Demand for specialist Children and Young People’s Mental Health Services has continued to increase in recent years, leading to long waiting times and insufficient support, challenges particularly exacerbated in Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities, low-income families, and other marginalised groups during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Bids are invited for funding to develop innovative solutions to tackle three specific challenges:
- Mental health service and support improvements
- Mental health service access
- Support for disadvantaged, marginalised, or Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities.

2. NHS Reset and Recovery from the pandemic and consider new ways of working
Recognising the need to support NHS services to reset and recover from the pandemic, the programme seeks to address this immediate challenge.
Bids are invited for bid for funding to further develop innovative solutions in the following areas:

- Increasing NHS effectiveness.

Individual Development Awards
The NIHR Applied Research Collaboration Kent, Surrey and Sussex (ARC KSS) has launched its second round of Individual Development Awards (IDAs), to help support individuals to build their research careers across the region.
All Awards need to closely align with one or more of the ARC KSS research themes and will be allocated to applicants that can demonstrate a clear path in their career development, as well as evidence of how this award will help them towards their research goals.
In return, ARC KSS will provide a bespoke programme of support to successful applicants, including academic and/ or a health or social care professional mentor.

This conference will examine the applications of data in health and social care and discuss the measures that can be taken to scale up use, develop best practice guidelines, and support adoption across all levels of the health system. The event aims to improve understanding around data, address barriers to its use in health and social care, and develop a new approach to data-sharing following the use of data through the pandemic.
