<<First Name>>
“After the lesson was over last night, a young man raised his hand and said, “That story shouldn’t be for kids because he chopped off the guy’s head.” I love sharing the Bible with our children and hearing their responses to stories we sometimes skim over because we might be familiar with them. Now after David defeats the giant, David does something that seems pretty gross. He cuts off the head and takes the giant’s weapons and armor with him. Why? Why carry around the head of your enemy? What would he do with the armor of a giant?
I don’t think David does this to brag of his great military victory. That just wouldn’t seem consistent with his character. Instead, I wonder if David hangs on as a testimony to the victory God gave him. David keeps the armor as a reminder that God took down this giant, and the Lord will do so again and again.
We need to hold on to the victory God has given us. The problem with Saul, and the rest of the Israelite army is they allowed themselves to be defeated before the battle even began. Every day they faced their giant. For weeks Goliath mocked them and their God. They allowed themselves to become defeated, they forgot about their strengths.
It can be hard to remember your strengths when all we can see is the giant in front of us. But David wasn’t afraid. Playing to his strengths and confident in his faith, David faced the giant and defeated the enemy.
Like David, we need to hold on to the victory God gives. So many times we walk through this life defeated. But why live in fear when others mock us? Why cower when our faith is challenged? Satan has already been defeated. Jesus made a mockery of the devil and gained the victory when he was nailed to the cross and rose from the tomb.
God has already secured the victory! So claim it! Don’t let Satan hold power over any area of your life. Because there is no giant too great for the Lord to help you take down. Hold on to the victory God gives you, and stick to the strengths God has given you to prepare you for this moment.
