Hamilton and Immigration
Immigration is trending upwards in Canada, and Hamilton plays a growing role in this trend.

Hamilton has been receiving more new immigrants. Despite pandemic-related border closures, official landing data indicates that Hamilton has received unprecedented numbers of new immigrants in the first two quarters of 2021: just over 2,000 new permanent residents arrived in Hamilton.
It also has a growing share of immigrants to Canada. Hamilton normally receives around 1% of Canada’s total permanent resident admissions, but in 2021 the figure has been 1.42%.

Increased immigration to Hamilton has implications for the local labour market, and also for business start-up, school enrolment, consumer demand, housing needs and beyond.

Immigration growth in Hamilton corresponds with increased levels of immigration to Canada. The Government of Canada has set a target of 401,000 immigrants for 2021, with a forecast growth of 10,000 immigrants per year in 2022 and 2023.
