Dear colleagues and partners for college students' equity and success.
We hope you're well in the midst of much federal momentum toward budget, infrastructure and start-of-school priorities in an on-going pandemic.
Given this, we are advancing a Congressional sign-on for dual bicameral bills: Enhanced Access To SNAP (EATS) Act of 2021 (H.R. 1919 /S. 2515) and/or the Student Food Security Act (H.R.3100/ S. 1569). This letter urges House Education and Agriculture leaders to support students' food security by eliminating or alleviating the SNAP "student rule" that requires 20 hours per week of wage work on top of college coursework for those with demonstrated financial need pursuing a degree at least half-time.
September is national Hunger Action month and the House Rules committee hosted a hearing on College Student Hunger this week. Advocacy leaders from Swipe Out Hunger and The Hope Center for College, Community and Justice urged Congress to pass the EATS Act and Student Food Security Act. We hope you’ll join us in this effort and share the sign-on widely amongst your network.
The deadline to sign-on is noon Central time on Monday, September 20.
The final version, inclusive of all signatures, will be shared with participating organizations upon delivery to Congress, on or around Monday September 20, 2021.
Thank you for your on-going work to support college students' food security.
