Palestine: UNLIMITED

A traveling photography exhibit sponsored by the Middle East Peace Task Force of the Southwest California Synod

On display at Mt. Carmel during October
Photography from 10 Finalists in the Karimeh Abboud Award Competition

Palestine: Unlimited is an exhibition derived from a signature initiative of Dar Al Kalima University College of Arts and Culture in Bethlehem: a call to the best young photographers of Palestine to share interpretations of their country and its people. Here, ten finalists from the Karimeh Abboud Award Competition — named for a pioneering 20th century Palestinian female photographer — help us break through icons and stereotypes, in order to experience Palestine as it really is.

Book Discussion Group moves to Tuesday nights at 7:00pm

The Book Discussion Group, which had been meeting on zoom on Monday nights, has moved to Tuesdays at 7:00pm. We are reading Anne Lamott’s Traveling Mercies.

As noted in Goodreads:
Despite—or because of—her irreverence, faith is a natural subject for Anne Lamott. Since Operating Instructions and Bird by Bird, her fans have been waiting for her to write the book that explained how she came to the big-hearted, grateful, generous faith that she so often alluded to in her two earlier nonfiction books. . . . Lamott's faith isn't about easy answers, which is part of what endears her to believers as well as nonbelievers. Against all odds, she came to believe in God, and then, even more miraculously, in herself. As she puts it, "My coming to faith did not start with a leap but rather a series of staggers." At once tough, personal, affectionate, wise, and very funny, Traveling Mercies tells in exuberant detail how Anne Lamott learned to shine the light of faith on the darkest part of ordinary life, exposing surprising pockets of meaning and hope.
This week at the constructions site:

WORK BEGINS
A few little signs of activity have been seen in the upper lot this week - a port-o-potty is on site; trees in the parking island have been trimmed to accommodate heavy equipment; temporary electricity has been added; and a big Caterpillar tractor has been added to the landscape. Pictures and more infomation to follow next week.

We will continue to provide as much information as possible about the changes happening around us. Please contact John Cook or MaryAnn Jakes if you have any questions.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH
GOD'S WORK, OUR HANDS OPPORTUNITY!

ECOSLO's Annual Creeks to Coast Cleanup is coming up in September!

SLO County's Creeks to Coast Cleanup (as part of Coastal Cleanup Day) will take place from Thursday, September 16 through Thursday, September 30. Small groups, households, families, and individuals can decide when to hold their cleanup at a time that is convenient for them. We encourage volunteers to pick up litter that they find in their local neighborhoods, parks, downtown areas, creeks, beaches, and coastlines - this way, we can maintain a safe event and cover more areas in the process.

Through our two-week event last year, Creeks to Coast Cleanup proved successful as over 600 volunteers participated and collected almost 5,000 pounds of trash and recyclables. In total, we tracked 267 cleanups county-wide. It was such a wonderful opportunity to see the community's response with these cleanup kits!

What's in a cleanup kit?
The cleanup kits are boxes designed to empower a group of five people, or less, to hold a successful cleanup at the time and place of their choosing, within SLO County. Only one person per group needs to sign up for a kit. The kits include:
  •     Gloves and trash bags
  •     Data card and instructions for data collection
  •     Educational pamphlets from California Coastal Commission
  •     1 Adopt-A-Road Brochure
  •     SLO County IWMA trash/recycle/green waste stickers for your home curbside bins
  •     ECOSLO stickers
  •     Wildflower seeds packet from County of SLO Public Works
  •     $10 coupon to House of Bread
  •     Free voucher up to $55 to Sloco Health + Wellness
  •     Free cup of clam chowder coupon from Splash Cafe
  •     1 cotton mesh produce bag, a bandanna, or other reusable/sustainable item!
CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR YOU KIT!

For more information or any questions, please contact ECOSLO's Creeks to Coast Cleanup Coordinator, Maddie, at
programs@ecoslo.org.
THANK YOU for the backpacks and school supplies for the children of Iglesia Santa Cruz. We delivered a total of 45 backpacks (1 1/2 times our goal of 30), and enough school supplies to help all the children begin the school year on the right track.

Remember the Drive Thru Donations for Iglesia Santa Cruz? Now that most of us are meeting in person each Sunday, we are asking that donations continue in a different manner as the need for food and personal items continues. Please bring donations to church on Sunday and leave them in the grocery cart in the narthex, stop by the office between 9am and 1pm Monday - Friday, or call the office at 805-544-2133 to schedule a drop-off time or to ask for assistance. Although all donations are welcome anytime, a list of most needed items is listed here as well as a suggested donation schedule. Lists are also available on the cart in the narthex. Thank you for your continued support.

1st Sundays - Rice & Beans
2nd Sundays - Masa & Oil
3rd Sundays - Sugar & Salt
4th Sundays - Laundry/Dish Soap & Pesonal hygeine items (men & women)
5th Sundays - Socks and Undies (All ages/genders)

Donations of gift cards are easy to purchase and easy to transport. All gift cards are presented to Pastor Esteban Salazar at Iglesia Santa Cruz. Pastor Salazar distributes the cards to different families each month, as needed.

Thrivent grants are always a blessing. Your Thrivent dollars are generally used to purchase items from the list above. Please contact Steve Bennett if you would like more information about Thrivent grants.

Matching Gifts Challenge Benefitting the SLO County Food Bank

The new donation site is up and running. Please click the link below for more information.

Link to Mt. Carmel matching funds page

If you prefer to donate to the matching funds challenge by check, make your check out to the SLO County Food Bank. Write Mt. Carmel Matching Funds Drive on the memo line so that your donation will be properly credited.  Mail to:

Food Bank Coalition of SLO County
1180 Kendall Road
San Luis Obispo, CA 93401

Please do not route your food bank donations through Mount Carmel.  Doing so will delay your donation and make tracking the matching funds challenge donations difficult for the food bank.

Thank you to Mount Carmel for your always generous spirit!
