OCTOBER 2021

NEWSLETTER

Dear <<First Name>>,

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, offering a great opportunity not only to educate male and female employees on this dread disease, but also to promote overall health and wellness as a preventative measure. Speaking of preventative measures, while South Africa opens up under lockdown level one, we encourage our members to remain  observant in following COVID-19 safety protocols, to all play our part in preventing a fourth wave.

This month we bring you an article that serves as an employer's guide to installing an EAP.  We also take a look at what it takes to coach employees through change.

We bring you an article that takes a look at breast cancer and its prevalence, and shares ideas on promoting breast cancer awareness in the workplace.  We also take a look at the importance of diversity in the workplace, particularly from a millennial perspective.

We love hearing from you and welcome your feedback. We are always keen for you to share comments on our newsletter articles. Feel free to get in touch with us with your input on new article ideas: to tell us what you enjoy most and what you would like to read more about in your EAPA-SA newsletter.

An Employer’s Guide to Installing EAP Services

Employers understand that their organisation can only benefit - both from a productivity perspective and in a way that will ultimately affect the bottom line - when its employees are not struggling with overwhelming personal issues. Employee Assistance Programmes (EAPs) are an employee benefit provided by an organisation to assist employees resolve issues that could negatively impact their work and home lives. The idea of installing an EAP is to address personal issues before they interfere with work performance. >>>

Coaching Employees Through Change

The role of any successful team leader, manager or executive in an organisation today can be likened to that of a sports coach. Their focus should centre on developing their employees into “super-star players” by helping them to overcome obstacles, building and leveraging their strengths and ensuring employees’ hearts and minds remain engaged.  These leaders-turned-coaches play another important role in their people’s lives – one that is essential to the success of the organisation. They help employees’ transition through the constant change that is inevitable at work and in their personal lives. This includes navigating both planned and unexpected change. >>>

Breast Cancer Awareness in the Workplace

October is breast cancer awareness month. Did you know that breast cancer tops the list of cancers affecting women in South Africa? Apart from non-melanoma skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer in women of all races, with a lifetime risk of 1 in 25 in South Africa, according to the 2017 National Cancer Registry (NCR). However, all is not doom and gloom - survival rates are improving. This can be attributed to factors that include better early detection and diagnosis at a localised stage, as well as improved surgical procedures and personalised adjuvant treatment regimens.  >>>

The Importance of Diversity in the Workplace

The COVID-19 pandemic has given employers lots of challenges. Not only have they had to protect the health of their employees, they continue to have to cope with far-reaching operational disruptions. At the same time, they are having to execute plans for recovery and adapt their business models to survive and thrive in the new normal. It is easy to understand why, in facing recent challenges, the task of furthering diversity may have taken a back seat. And yet, fostering diversity and inclusion in the workplace is more important than ever. >>>
