How is a Time Trial different from Mass Start?

If you raced with MiSCA in 2020, you're no stranger to the Time Trial format. While we adopted this format for safety reasons in 2020, it opened up opportunities to race at new venues that are not a good fit for mass start racing (less passing opportunities, limited parking, limited infield area). It also allowed us to expose riders to a different race format that is somewhat common, with the Yankee Springs and Maybury CPS races using the format. Some racers love it, others hate it - it's different and you have to be more self-motivated to keep your pace without the head-to-head aspect of the mass start format.

"Time trials are the testing of the athlete against the clock, not other competitors. In a time trial race participants are sent off onto the race course one at a time with small gaps between each other. Each racer is timed individually and whoever finishes with the fastest time is the winner."
- Team Athletic Mentors -

For 2021, riders will be staged together by category, with the start order based on current series standing. We are still staging 6-wide; however, only 1 rider will start every 15-seconds. Once an entire row has started, we'll move the remaining rows closer to the start line until all racers from a category have started the race. Then we'll move on to the next category within the wave. Using wave 2 as an example, we will start all JV 9-10 boys, then we'll start all JV 11-12 boys, then we'll start all JV 9-12 girls. You will notice categories have different staging times for this race, so racers won't have to wait too long in staging.

As mentioned earlier, the trails used for time trials often have limited passing. Please be courteous and allow faster riders to pass - remember, you're not racing head to head and if they caught you they already beat you by at least 15-seconds. It's also possible the rider asking for a pass is racing in a different category that started much earlier or later than you.

Ins and Outs of Mountain Bike Time Trialing, Team Athletic Mentors

1 Child = 1 Race Day Volunteer Needed!

We need your help to ensure race day is safe and runs smoothly. If you have a child racing in the D&D Bicycles 2021 MiSCA Race Series, please sign up to volunteer for a few hours. If every family volunteers just once, we will have plenty of volunteers to fill the year! You can sign up for these important roles via SignUp.com or email us. We also need help with setup on Saturdays!
  • Course Marking and Start/Finish Setup: Hop on a bike or help out near the pits, clearly identifying course direction/boundaries and hazards to avoid. Your help ensures we start the races on time!
  • Parking and Traffic Control: Greet folks as they arrive and direct them to the designated parking areas. Direct traffic for road closures.
  • Staging / Start: Assist staff at the Start Line with the staging of riders, move-up of rows as riders depart, ensuring the correct departure order is followed, and assisting with manual timing backup in the event of a system failure.
  • Course Marshal: Be right in the heart of racing! Stationary and Roaming Course Marshals are on the course to help ensure that riders stay on course, remain uninjured, and make other park users aware of the race. It's a prime time spectating position. Responsibilities
  • Course Cleanup: Our goal is to "leave no trace" and many hands make light work!

How do Individual Series Standings work?
We're now halfway into the D&D Bicycles 2021 MiSCA Race Series, so let's review how the series points work. Riders are awarded points after each race, based on their finish place. Points vary depending on category, but 1st place receives the most points (up to 120), 2nd place (up to 117), 3rd place (up to 114) and the trend continues with fewer points awarded for the remaining riders. Students only need to start 3 races to qualify for awards and the overall score is based on a student's top 5 races. Make sure you check your standings to make sure there are no unexpected issues. The leader in each category will be awarded the MiSCA State Championship, with Series awards to the top 3. The current standings do not account for a dropped race so it's very possible for someone to dramatically move up in the rankings at the last race. In the case of a tie at the end of the series, the 1st tie breaker will be who the top rider was the most times in head to head competition among the tied riders. The 2nd tie breaker will be who the top rider was the last time the riders faced each other.

What about Team Scoring and Series Points?
Teams are broken down into 5 divisions: High School Scholastic D1, High School Scholastic D2, High School Composite, Middle School Composite, and Elementary Composite. Composite teams are open to all riders, while Scholastic teams only include riders from a single school (with few exceptions). Team points are calculated at each race by totaling the points of the top 6 point-earners from each HS Scholastic D1 team and the top 4 point-earners from all other divisions. Note, teams must include both girls and boys (starting the race) to be eligible for team awards. We create an overall score based on the total of all 6 races and award the State Championship to the top overall team in each division.

Coaches Race @ Cannonsburg on Saturday, October 16th!
We really cannot fit any additional races into Sunday race day, so the 2021 coaches race will occur on Saturday, October 16th, the day before the Hammerhead Bikes state championship race at Cannonsburg. Registration is free and open now in SportsSignUp Play but only available for registered MiSCA coaches. Race start will be at 3:30 pm and we're hoping lots of people will stick around for the haunted forest and glowing forest at Cannonsburg!

The coaches race was LOTS of FUN in 2018 and 2019 and while this event is for the coaches, it's ultimately for the kids - they enjoy seeing you out there too! That's why we encourage a fun environment with 2 beginner laps, a fun start, and costumes (oh... the costumes).

This is a FUN race as a chance for our student-athletes to celebrate our coaches.

  • Please don't take it too seriously - no injuries!
  • Costumes are HIGHLY encouraged
  • There will be an interesting start (likely some form of lemans)
Register in SportsSignUp Play today! Log in at www.miscabike.org/register, click "Register to Play/Participate", choose your name, and select the coaches race from the list. Complete the FREE registration and you're good to go! If you're not seeing the coaches race, you may have chosen a child's name and not your name OR you clicked into Race #6 which is a different registration for the students.

BRING YOUR COACH PLATE TO THE NEXT RACE, CHECK-IN AT THE INFORMATION TENT TO HAVE A TIMING TAG APPLIED TO THE BACK OF YOUR PLATE.

NOTE: THERE IS NO RACE-DAY REGISTRATION FOR THE COACHES RACE! There are always a few bummed coaches that miss out - don't be that coach - register today! Online registration will close at 11:59 pm on Oct 14th and there are no exceptions to this deadline.

Lastly, if we do something fun for the start again this year, please let us know if you cannot complete the action but would still like to ride in the race. We will make exceptions - this is a FUN event.

Support our Mission!
The Michigan Scholastic Cycling Association (MiSCA) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that empowers communities to develop and grow K-12 youth mountain biking programs across the state. We instill confidence by promoting the values of an active lifestyle, healthy competition, and outdoor stewardship and adventure while building life-long friendships in an inclusive environment. MiSCA now serves more than 1,000 kids and 300 coaches throughout the state, with new clubs/teams forming all the time. In the fall, MiSCA holds a professionally-run 6-event youth-only mountain bike race series. We provide coach training and support through a certification program that requires skills clinics, first aid/CPR training, background checks, and more to ensure safe and consistent education is provided to our youth. Additionally, MiSCA has programming focused on getting more girls active in the sport by creating girls-only events where girls feel welcomed and ensuring girls are included equally in all aspects of the organization. Cycling is truly a lifelong sport, and we strive to create a fun environment where everyone can experience the joys of the outdoors.
