Nebraska Beef Passport Winners Announced

Over 5,000 stamps were collected during the 19-week Nebraska Beef Passport promotion which ran May 1st through September 10th. The beef passport encouraged Nebraskans and tourists to visit participating restaurants throughout the state, order beef menu items and collect stamps for their chance to win prizes. Passports were requested from over 600 communities and 39 states. Nine lucky winners were selected out of the thousands of participants.

Mary Jo Keenan of Hastings was the grand prize winner, receiving a $500 beef bundle from Custom Pack Inc. and a Beef. It’s What’s For Dinner Cabela’s Cooler. Submitted passports with at least 11 stamps were eligible for the top prize.

“It was fun to see the stamped passports come back and the notes from participants who enjoyed the experience,” said Adam Wegner, director of marketing for the Nebraska Beef Council. “Some shared that they used the opportunity to see parts of the state they had never been to before or to connect with friends and family they hadn’t seen in a while."

Nebraska Kids Fitness & Nutrition Day

September marked the 17th annual Nebraska Kids Fitness and Nutrition Day hosted at the University of Nebraska-Kearney. Over 800 fourth-graders from 10 area communities participated in the event as a way to educate students on the ways physical activity and nutrition work together to maintain health. The Beef Checkoff worked with UNK faculty and administrators to design hands-on nutrition messaging that focused on beef’s nutritional benefits as a healthy snack and meal option.

Physical activities were hosted by UNK students that focused on team-building and exercise. Inside the Health and Sports Center, fourth-graders learned about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle through interactive stations that taught them about nutrition labels, portion control, and the MyPlate nutrition guide. The curriculum is also used to host similar events in Hastings, McCook, Ogallala, Chadron, Sidney and Alliance, reaching more than 2,600 fourth-grade students in total.
