Esperanza is looking for VOLUNTEERS AND INTERNS at their Hunting Park (4417 N 6th St) site. Additionally, there is a Patients Relations project which does not require speaking Spanish, but understanding it in order to fill out documents.

Email pmoore04@temple.edu or make an appointment: calendly.com/pmoore04 to find out more.  You may use an internship for the hour requirement for  SPAN 4885: Spanish Internship for the spring semester.  (2096 prerequisite)

Current volunteers have until October 15 to provide proof of full vaccination. Applicants can be onboarded and start with proof of vaccine #1 and an appointment for vaccine #2 on or before October 15.
CLUBS & EVENTS

Teatro Paloma will be presenting Swimming While Drowning  this November in Lancaster City. The play delves into themes of Latinx LGBT+ homelessness and coming-of-age experiences as it tries to challenge the preconceived ideas of "Latinidad".

When teenager Angelo Mendez decides to leave his home out of fear of further disappointing his homophobic father, he encounters a world he was not prepared for at an LGBT homeless shelter in Los Angeles. There he meets a fellow homeless teen who gives him a voice and unexpectedly introduces him to love. Angelo ultimately learns that all relationships, no matter how powerful, have an unfortunate time cap which he must cope with through his writing. A dark romantic comedy set in a homeless shelter. A story that is simultaneously gritty, sweet, funny, heartbreaking and real.

ASOCIACION DE
ESTUDIANTES LATINOS

Check out their Introduction Video in the link above.  AdEL meets every Wednesday at 5:30p.m. in SAC 200!

AdEL was founded in the fall of 1994 by a group of sophomores looking to enhance awareness of the Latinx presence on Temple’s campus. The group spearheaded the project by making connections with students and faculty who were interested and supportive of the cause. While the organization started off small (5-7 members), it grew to over 40 members in a matter of one academic school year. AdEL was able to further back its credibility, as well as increase its member pool, by reaching out and involving itself in the Philadelphia Latino community. It did so by organizing community service events and holding on campus sessions that were open to the public. Seeing the ever-increasing popularity of AdEL, many other student entities including fraternities, sororities, political groups, and dance organizations were able to branch out under our strong influence. AdEL still remains as the umbrella organization for all Latinx groups on Temple’s campus today.

AdEL has been recognized as an asset to both the Temple Latinx community and the Philadelphia Latino community. AdEL has been successful at planning, organizing, and executing many sensational events on and off campus. Events such as Free Food and Fun Friday, galas, diversity events, collaborations with other organizations, and charity fundraisers have made powerful impressions on the communities we cater to. Members also enjoy our weekly meetings which have been put into place to maintain a solid following and to address current events and issues within the Latinx community.

 CAREER RESOURCES
 STUDY ABROAD & SCHOLARSHIPS
The Latin American Studies Semester has been offered every spring semester since 1973. This unique language immersion program provides you with an intensive experience studying the Spanish language in combination with an interdisciplinary study of life and contemporary issues in Latin America.

The prerequisite for participation in LASS is one semester of university-level Spanish or the equivalent (students with more advanced levels of course background are encouraged to participate in the program). LASS integrates several courses, totaling 17-semester-hour credits, and must be taken as a package. All courses are taught in Spanish from the first day of class on Temple’s main campus. An integral part of the LASS program is a three-week study trip to Latin America in February/March, during which students are placed in local homes where the only language of communication is Spanish. While abroad, students attend courses, make local friends, immerse themselves daily in the local culture and explore the country. The LASS program has taken place in Colombia, México, Costa Rica and Ecuador.  All participants in the program may expect to achieve marked improvement in Spanish fluency in only one semester.
