Online School Calendar

On Thursday, October 14, CS will have our first Conference Day of the year. Remaining conference days will be: December 17, March 10, and June 7.

Conference Day is an important component of your child’s social, emotional, physical, and cognitive assessment. There will be no classes on this day, but it is expected that children and parents or caregivers will meet (virtually or in-person) with classroom teachers to reflect on the first 6 weeks of school. You should have received a sign-up reminder from your child’s teacher.
Prior to conferences, students collaborate with their teachers to compile a selection of their work which best represents what they have been working on in class. Students evaluate their own progress, share how they feel about their work, and set goals for the upcoming nine weeks.
Please use the following link to sign up for a scheduled time:
https://myconferencetime.com/communityschool
Although the conference link is allowing you to schedule times for all four of the conferences , the time you schedule for the first conference will be your set time for the subsequent conferences this year.
Contact your child's teacher directly if the available times do not meet your needs.

Saving the Best for Last...

Last week we announced our class names and inadvertently left off Mike’s class in the middle school.  Their name is the Elon Muskrats.  Now we are sure to remember this one.

Individual student photo retakes will take place on Friday, October 15. Please email Anne Burton (anneb@communityschool.net) to add your student to the schedule.

Bricks to Pave the Way - Order Now as a Holiday Gift or Start Planning for CS Graduation
Leave a lasting impression on the Community School campus by purchasing a commemorative brick honoring your connection to the school. Recognize a beloved teacher or administrator, a student’s time at the school, a family of graduates or a loved one by personalizing a brick as a lasting tribute. The 4″x 8″ or 4″x 4″ bricks sizes are engraved using state-of-the art laser technology. Bricks will be installed along the brick walkways on campus. Every brick engraving is guaranteed for life!

Trout in the Classroom
This year there are TWO 50-gallon tanks on campus and they are home to about 600 trout eggs! The tanks are located in Tulie's and Mike's classrooms. Eggs were delivered to us by volunteers for the nationwide environmental education program Trout in the Classroom (TIC). Last year students raised and released healthy trout at Roaring Run. Once again, our students will join K-12 students across the country as they:

• raise trout from eggs
• monitor tank water quality
• engage in stream habitat study
• determine water quality by studying macro-invertebrates;
• learn to appreciate water resources
• begin to foster a conservation ethic
• grow to understand ecosystems

Most programs end the year by releasing their trout in a state-approved stream near the school or within a nearby watershed. During the year each teacher tailors the program to fit his or her curricular needs. Therefore, each program is unique. TIC has interdisciplinary applications in science, social studies, mathematics, language arts, fine arts and physical education.

On October 12th between 4:00 and 8:00, you can get dinner from the Towers Chipotle and they'll donate 33% to our school.

If you order in the app , you can use code LJLAA2W. If you order in person, you just need to show a flyer or mention that you are there for the Community School fundraiser *before* you pay.

We need to generate at least $150 in sales between 4:00 and 8:00 to get a donation. Unfortunately, gift cards don't count!

Bilingual Storytime
Community School is offering a Bilingual Storytime to children (ages 3-5), as a community outreach project put together by our middle school Spanish students. There will be a story, craft, refreshments, and each family will receive a copy of the storybook. We are asking our parents of current students to share this information with friends and family who do not already attend Community School, so that they might participate in this wonderful event.

Parents should plan to attend with their child(ren). Also, to adhere to safety protocols regarding COVID, this event will be outside, masked if you are over the age of 2, and distanced appropriately. RSVP to admissions@communityschool.net or (540) 563-5036. If we have reached 10 participants, we will add you to a waiting list, and you will have the first opportunity to join us for the next Bilingual Storytime in the Spring.
