If you haven't yet had time to visit our exhibition of digital composites by world renowned artist, Maggie Taylor, her show continues through November 7. We also have her books, which make fabulous Christmas gifts.
This week the sculpture gallery will be in a little disarray as we will be installing an exhibition of ceramic and mixed media works by Keith Schneider. We will have Keith's work available on our website in the next couple of days. Keith's show will open for the Second Saturday Art Walk on October 9. We will be open on Second Saturday through 8pm. We are limiting our capacity to ten visitors at one time for your comfort and health, so we request that large parties split their group to visit.

Keith Schneider
Keith Schneider grew up in the mid-century surf and skate culture of Southern California. In the late 1970s and through the 1980s he studied art in San Diego, Arcata and Santa Barbara, and was drawn to the Californian Funk Art movement. This appealed to his aesthetic and sensibilities more than the Abstract Expressionism or Minimalist art movements that had dominated the attention of cultural theorist for three decades. Funk Art’s irreverent humor and play with puns engaged his interest, and he cites sculptors Robert Arneson and Richard Shaw, and the painter Roy De Forest as sources of inspiration. It presented a more informal ceramic practice, and championed ceramic sculpture. Funk art gave artists permission to be mischievous, petulant or even silly.
This sense of mischief may be the reason that he is also attracted to trompe l'oeil - a French term that translates as "fool the eye." His figures are created as transmogrified vessel-based forms in ceramic, made to look like fabric and wood. Sometimes they are provided with vessels of their own such as a boat or wagon. His whimsical animal characters resemble cobbled together toys, worn, torn and repaired, loved and lost. Standing resilient, despite their threadbare appearance, they solicit our sympathy and affection. Keith tells of how, “often, as I am working, these pieces take on a life of their own and it is interesting to me that some of my characters seem worried and perplexed, some quizzical and amused, some mischievous and playful. Maggie Taylor Discusses the Development of her Digital Composites

Maggie Taylor began her career focusing on still life, a subject she still returns to in a reimagined form. Since 1996 she developed her practice around the manipulation of photography to create original digital compositions using Photoshop and other programs. She was, for a time, married to Jerry Uelsmann, an early exponent of photomonage in America. In 1995, Adobe's creative director tried to convince Uelsmann to try out Photoshop. He didn't like it, but Maggie embraced it as the main tool in creating her surrealist work. Breaking new ground, she became a pioneer on the field of digital arts.
