As a response to pandemic-related food and housing insecurity, Step Up to the Plate transformed a Kensington parking lot into the "Love Lot"; where 500-600 residents receive catered lunches each day, as well as COVID-19 testing and opioid intervention.
A dozen Orchestra 2001 musicians have performed at Love Lot lunches throughout the pandemic, funded in large part by the William Penn Foundation. The brick wall adjoining the parking lot is adorned with images by local artists, including a colorful “Hello, Sunshine” mural by Rosalind Pichardo, John Zerbe, and Leon Rainbow.
Through Orchestra 2001's partnership with Step Up to the Plate, Matt Davis has played solo guitar performances for the community at the Love Lot during much of the pandemic. On Friday he will share his new composition, The Hello Sunshine Suite, inspired by the mural, and dedicated to the passionate social work of Roz Pichardo. This new piece for four musicians consists of two movements which aim to express both the joy in helping others, as well as the profound challenges faced by many in this particular community.
