Hiring Well Takes Skill and Discipline

A lot is being said these days about the talent shortage, I am going to take a counter position to that and say that recruiting and placement of qualified candidates requires skill and focus.

I agree that there are ever increasing pressures on the job market and on wages but there are a few consistent requests by candidates:

            •    they want to be paid fairly for the level of work they do,
            •    they want to make an impact on organizational success, and
            •    they want to feel valued by the organization.

The number of jobs available still outnumber those on unemployment which means that people are living by the old adage of, “its better to get a job while you have a job.” This is where the term the Great Resignation stems from. People are leaving due to burnout, toxic culture, or the desire to continue working remotely at least part of the time.

Seeking and finding the candidates that are right for your company takes time, effort, and creativity. Large companies may have dedicated professional recruiters while small business owners and managers are working hard to build a business while also trying to grow their staffs. Their talents are not in recruiting so they often rely on their personal networks or a very general posting on standard online job boards. Though there may be activity, it takes time to screen and interview, coordinate with other managers, and ensure that offer letters and employment agreements are prepared, not to mention the initial onboarding tasks. Time is precious to running a business and taking too much time can lose good qualified candidates.

The moral of the story is that there are good, qualified candidates that fit your small business and culture. Invest in someone who is skilled in finding and securing these candidates while you maintain laser focus on building a successful business.

Why All Employees Need Leadership Training

One way to succeed in an increasingly fast-paced, digitized global economy is to provide leadership training for every employee. Decision-making and responsiveness is the main ingredient to adapting to the challenges of an overwhelmed staff, retiring co-workers and working with co-workers who are more widely dispersed. Also, employees are more motivated and engaged when they’re given more of a say in the work they do. Having a place at the table, high-performing employees stay because providing leadership training says they’re valued and that what they have to offer is valuable to your organization.
