From the Head of School

Dear Gardner community,

Every day, it's incredible to see the wide range of activity, creativity, and social interactions happening across campus. Start of the year assessments are wrapping up, and classes are diving deeply into their academic learning in math, reading, writing, and Thematics. Teachers are preparing for parent conferences to individually connect with families on their children's assessments and goals for the year ahead.

Last week, our Klickitat class adventured to the Ape Caves to experience hands on learning for their Geology Thematic. What an experience! In Wy'East, they've been enjoying special interest events like bringing their cats and dogs to school to share and build community. Loowit learners are becoming archeologists and starting to "dig deep" into their rock cycle learning and building their rock collections. Across the school, experiential learning is a continued focus as we connect the learning to the bigger picture in the real world.

It was wonderful to see more families on campus last week for our successful Book Fair! A big thank you to our parent volunteers for setting up, working the check out, breaking down, and all of the other logistical details that go into making it a success. Our school celebrated literacy and added some amazing books to our classroom collections, too.

While all these extraordinary events took place, we also continue to manage the realities of running an in-person school in the time of a global pandemic. I am grateful for the continued openness and trust you all bring to this process, and I am proud of our prevention and response plans.

Take care,

“I like this school. I like it here because you always set up a new activity for us and it’s really fun!”

News from the PTO
Thank you to everyone who came out for the Scholastic Book Fair last week! We were so thankful to see the kids getting so excited about books. In total, we sold a $4,102.97 worth of books and other items, and a portion of that comes back to support future Gardner School activities.

The success of the book fair is thanks to all of you, and in particular, to the volunteers who helped set up, cashier, and tear down. We are looking forward to more fun activites, like teacher appreciation and classroom Halloween parties in the coming months!

If you are interested in attending the next PTO meeting on Wednesday, October 6th at 9:30 am, please reach out to Susan Melton, PTO Chair, at ptochair@gardnerschool.org. Can't make this meeting but would like to hear more about the plans and find out how to help? Let us know!

Learning in Action

Field Trips and Experiential Learning
Our students are getting back out on field trips, following all the current guidelines and safety procedures! Our Klickitat class, 5th and 6th grade, took a trip to Ape Caves last week to see firsthand the geological features they are learning about in class during Thematics. They got to go into the Upper Trail, and worked on skills like perseverance, courage, and collaboration. They also got to learn about snottites, also known as snoticles!

Our Wy'East classroom, 3rd and 4th grade, continued their hiking activities at the WSU-V campus, where students get to connect with one another while taking in the peaceful surroundings. Additionally, they zoomed with Centerlogic, Inc. and learned all about cybersecurity and how to protect from hacking. They are also looking forward to a virtual presentation and Q&A session with NASA astronaut, Dr. Michael Barratt.

By introducing students to experts in various fields, and by letting them explore and experience their environments with their classmates, our students deepen understanding, make connections between concepts, and engage more fully with their learning. We look forward to sharing more classroom experiences in the coming months!
