Haig-Brown Festival & Lecture
Sunday was marvellous

Despite some leaky clouds (and a leaky canopy), we had the best time at the 2021 Haig-Brown Festival! There's no better way to celebrate River's Day than at our favourite Campbell RIVER location, the Haig-Brown House, and alongside our amazing community partners. Families loved our watershed model demos, and Chuck’s nature walk along the Haig-Brown Kingfisher Creek as well as Callie and Melody's 'Rivers & Restoration' talk were a hit! We were even finally a big enough Greenways group for the #DifferentTogether Pledge photo - an initiative run by the Immigrant Welcome Centre [see pledge below].

The cherry on top of this fantastic line-up of events was the Haig-Brown Lecture w/ Dr. Suzanne Simard who presented her book 'Finding the Mother Tree' followed by a panel discussion with some wonderful local environmental stewards: Cynthia Bendickson, Sandra Milligan, Gina Thomas and Cory Cliffe.

#SalmonSpawnWatch
Become a citizen scientist and share your salmon observations online!

A message from the Watershed Watch Salmon Society: "You can help us build a better picture of how the salmon returns are faring across the province. If you head out to see salmon spawning in your area, use your phone to take photos or make a short video and post on it social media with the date and location and the hashtag #salmonspawnwatch. Include any observations you make while you are there. If there are no salmon returning, and you expect them to, that is an important observation too!"

LOOP DAY 2021

TOMORROW: Sat, Oct 2

Put on something green & hop, walk, stroll, roll or dance along the Greenways Loop between 10am and noon on October 2: Greenways will be running a 'station' at the Trask Road entrance to the Beaver Lodge - we're bringing our watershed table, stories & snacks! The wonderful and hardworking 'Loop Group' has shared event details on their 'Greenways Loop' FB page. Check out the locations of the other six stations and loop by counter-clockwise tomorrow!

Project Update

Streamkeepers - Simms Creek Restoration

What's new with our Stream'Team?
In early September, Greenways’ Urban Watershed Restoration Crew worked alongside Simms Creek Streamkeepers on a habitat enhancement project, which involved reducing a few large debris jams, cleaning up garbage, and pulling out invasive plants. With the help from our dedicated volunteers and streamkeepers, we managed to remove 780 kg of garbage and invasive species from Simms Creek! The streamkeepers and the crew also installed conifer brush bundles at three locations in the stream where there was poor vegetation cover. The intention of the brush bundles was to provide salmon and other fish species with shelter and aquatic invertebrates as food sources.

A WIN WIN WIN

These activities will improve habitat conditions for fish and wildlife, while reducing flood risks on neighbouring properties.

THANK YOU!

The Simms Creek restoration projects would not have been possible without the generous funding from The Healthy Watersheds Initiative (a program delivered by the Real Estate Foundation of BC and Watersheds BC, with financial support from the Province of British Columbia as part of its $10-billion COVID-19 response)!
We also want to extent our thanks to:

  • The Campbell River Community Foundation for supporting Streamkeeper engagement!
  • The Campbell River Salmon Foundation for funding the Simms Creek Habitat Assessment that informed most of the restoration projects accomplished this year!
  • The DFO Community Advisor Stacey Larsen and Simms Creek Streamkeepers for sharing their expertise and knowledge!
