From the Principal's Desk

I wish every one of our learners a well-deserved break next week.  I hope that this will be an enjoyable and rejuvenating time.  Matrics are encouraged to balance their work with some time out as once the term starts, they will soon be commencing with the final NSC examinations.

Parents and guardians, my challenge for you is to find at least one thing next week that is a spoil for your child, something to make them smile and feel the love you have for them.  Learners, I dare you to surprise your family with some extra help around the house and to spend some time with those who share a home with you.

It has been a long and exhausting term and we are well aware of the toll that COVID regulations are taking on all of us, so let's be kind to each other.  In the Hostel, there is a poster that one of the boarders put up.  I believe it sums up so much that we sometimes forget.  Let’s be kind to each other and take the time to hear each other's stories.

Last week we had the privilege of hearing Emma Sadleir speak to our learners about online risk and etiquette.  One bit of advice she frequently gives (which is not popular with young people), is setting up a contract with your child for their smartphone usage.  One of the conditions is that the phone is not next to their beds at night charging (rather buy them an alarm clock so that they don't have a need for their phones at night).  Even more difficult is that it is recommended that we as parents model this behaviour.  The addiction we have all developed to our cellphones needs to be curbed if we wish to decrease our dependence on a virtual world. My favourite Instagram post of this last week is this very short video demonstrating how easy it is to say hurtful things online as opposed to face to face. https://www.instagram.com/p/CULHTOwr7wQ/

I hope the break brings some good family time.

Grade 9 Parents Please note: Grade 9 Systemic Tests - 20 October

On 20 October, the Grade 9s will write their systemic tests during the school day. These internationally benchmarked tests consist of two sections, Mathematics and Language, and are administered by the Western Cape Education Department. The data from the tests are used to help the provincial department identify specific areas in these key subjects where work is needed to improve learners' abilities.
This is a compulsory school day for all Grade 9 learners. No learning or preparation is required. Further details regarding times and venues will be communicated next term.

Grade 11 ID Documents

Before the end of the year each Grade 11 pupil must be in possession of either:

  • RSA Identity Card/Book for South African citizens

  • Passport and Study Permit for immigrants

A copy of this needs to be given to your child’s form teacher before the end of the term. We need these documents to enrol your child for the matric exams. Please use the upcoming holidays if you still need to take your child to Home Affairs to apply for one.

Grade 10 LO Projects

We usually encourage our Grade 10 pupils to take part in some form of Community Service as part of their Life Orientation Task in Term 3. This year our Grade 10s have had to come up with their very own initiative/drive/campaign with a unique mission/vision and purpose and create a website to promote and raise awareness for their cause.
