VENDORS IN THE SPOTLIGHT
ORCHIDS OF COURSE

If you’ve ever been to our market, you have certainly seen our friend Vicky and her beautiful orchids. Her infectious smile and warm personality has made her a favorite for customers and vendors alike for years. Vicky loves talking with her customers about her flowers, offering tips and expert advice on how to care for them. “We get feedback from our customers months later about how they last so long, with many even telling us that they got their orchids to re-bloom for the first time. What a joy that I get from them. The exchange of experience and conversation is really what we have earned from being at the La Jolla Open Aire Market."

"Thirty years ago, these exotic, elegant and beautiful flowers were very expensive. Thanks to the advanced gene technology, we are able to do in lab cross breeding and propagation, resulting in providing tens of thousands of varieties, sizes, color graphics and even fragrance. With scientific studies, we learned how and what to provide in terms of the growing environment. Nowadays, we can all afford an orchid for our home decor."

Vicky grows her orchids in a totally enclosed greenhouse for protection from bugs and rodents. These flowers also need diffused sunlight, ventilated air circulation and even misting or higher humidity. Air conditioning or heating is also need in order to maintain the temperatures in the proper range in all seasons. According to Vicky, it sounds complicated but it’s all science and thus easily controlled.

Victoria started growing orchids more than 18 years ago.  Her childhood was influenced by her mother who was fond of flowers. "Back in the 50’s, people hardly had enough money for food, but our home always had flowers. Mums, gladiolas and orchids were often the choices as they last long and they’d re-bloom."

Catch Vicky at the market entrance every other Sunday, including this Sunday!
SAGEWOOD VINES

What does a stay-at-home mom do, who doesn’t actually stay home, when she really has to really stay home during a pandemic lockdown?  She starts a jam business of course!

Poway, California’s Sagewood Vines is a Cottage Food Operation and pandemic born business that produces homemade jams, jellies, preserves and is currently developing fruit rolls including low sugar and sugar free options.  They sell primarily at three farmer’s markets including La Jolla, Poway and Bernardo Winery.  The owners, Pete and Peggy Schultz, make their products with organic and local fruit, some of which is grown on their property, and the bulk is sourced from neighboring backyards and organic farms in San Diego County.  Pete and Peggy are committed to reducing plastic use and glass waste by offering paper shopping bags and accepting used SV mason jars for credit toward a future purchase. Returned jars will be sterilized and reused.  Customers can keep the standard size mason jars and use them for home preservation as well.  Pete, whose day job is in highway construction, contributes to Sagewood Vines by collecting supplies, helping with fruit preparation and farmer’s market setup.  Peggy, a stay-at-home mom transitioning into a full-time business operator, contributes by developing recipes, making products and customer relations. For more about the history of Sagewood Vines, you can visit their website at www.sagewoodvines.com.  They are also on Facebook and Instagram @sagewoodvines where they enjoy posting photos of new products and business updates.

Please look for Peggy at the north end of the covered lunch arbor most Sundays. She offers samples of her incredible products and is always a joy to speak with!
ONE OF A KIND

Meet Tiffany Camejo, founder of One of a Kind. Tiffany lives in San Diego with her husband and teenage daughter, Kayla (pictured above), and specializes in creating epoxy-resin art and jewelry. All of her art is nature-inspired, specifically ocean and floral themes. Being One of a Kind, she always strives to find unique pieces to turn into art.

“When I first began creating resin art and jewelry back in 2019, I was having so much fun creating art that I had no intention of selling any of it. It wasn’t until friends began asking if they could buy my products that I considered selling them. I felt so insecure about sharing my work, but hearing their positive feedback filled my heart.

When the quarantine hit, I wanted to keep selling, so I opened an Etsy store and with every new order my passion grew, which also encouraged me to sign up for my first craft show. It was so successful that my husband decided we should rent a retail space in Local Niche Mission Valley Handmade Collective. I’ve participated in over ten artisan markets and am now in five retail stores: Local Niche Mission Valley and UTC, Adore Boutique Carlsbad Village and The Forum Carlsbad, and Di Torr in Hillcrest.

After working in restaurants for 20+ years, starting a business from scratch was a challenge. I created the art and still had to build my brand, set up an online store, take photos, and write product descriptions. The vendor markets were also new to me. Aside from selling Girl Scout cookies with my daughter, I had no idea how to be a successful vendor. My daughter and I bonded over the business and she was a huge help with everything from marketing to building displays.  My business has sparked a family affair. My daughter’s entrepreneurial spirit has been ignited and she now sells her own jewelry designs. She also manages my social media accounts. My husband has even collaborated with me on pieces, using his laser engraver.

I am grateful for my support system. I would not be where I am today with our the support from family, friends, and fellow artists and I’ve even learned to take time for myself, focus on personal development and adopt a wellness routine.”

You can find Tiffany and Kayla with their amazing products in our new east lot, just past the covered lunch arbor, each Sunday.
