Breaking the cycle
KSS AHSN and NIHR Applied Research Collaboration Kent Surrey Sussex (ARC KSS) are among the contributors to a new report investigating investment in eating disorder research in the UK.
The ‘Breaking the Cycle’ report compiled by Beat – the eating disorder charity – on behalf of the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Eating Disorders sets out the findings and recommendations from the APPG’s inquiry into research funding, conducted from December 2020 to Spring 2021.
The report sets out actions for research funders (including government), universities, the NHS, academics and others to help achieve the much-needed advances in knowledge that research can deliver.

Awards succes
Congratulations to Surrey Heartlands CCG for its success in the Digital Health Partnership Award.
As one of the 14 Phase 1 winners Surrey Heartlands CCG will be extending its hypertension remote monitoring service to all poorly controlled patients, as well as developing digital pathways for patients with CVD and other long term conditions so that patients can use a single digital health technology to manage multiple long term conditions.
The awards were launched by the Innovation Development Team, part of the Chief Digital Officer Directorate, to help NHS organisations in England to bid for funding to accelerate the adoption of digital health technologies to support patients with long term conditions focusing on supporting people at home.
The Award brings together partners critical to the scaling of digital health technology. These include technology partners, patient activation and adoption and outcomes, benefits realisation.

Overprescribing review
Led by Chief Pharmaceutical Officer for England Dr Keith Ridge CBE, the government-commissioned review into overprescribing found 10% of the volume of prescription items dispensed through primary care in England are either inappropriate for that patients’ circumstances and wishes, or could be better served with alternative treatments.
The review sets out a series of practical and cultural changes to make sure patients get the most appropriate treatment for their needs while also ensuring clinicians’ time is well spent and taxpayer money is used wisely.

How a new test is improving asthma care
It’s suspected that 30 per cent of 5.4 million patients currently diagnosed with asthma in the UK have been misdiagnosed.
The latest Health Innovation podcast from the AHSN Network hears about a programme to improve the diagnosis and management of asthma within primary care, through the spread of a breathing test called FeNO.

Measuring business contribution to health
Business for Health (B4H) and the Confederation of Business Industry (CBI) are engaging the business community to design a Business Index to measure business contribution to health and promote the role of business in creating a healthier nation - recognising that health is the foundation for wellbeing and economic growth.
Building on CBI’s report, Seize the Moment: How Can Business Transform the UK Economy, B4H and the CBI are working together to provide practical ‘how to’ information to help businesses improve their contribution to population health and get ‘Health’ into ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) frameworks to guide innovation and investment in sustainable health.

Explore genomics in midwifery
Genomics is fundamental to midwifery practice. It allows midwives to predict and prepare for situations in pregnancy to better protect and care for the parent and child.
To help midwives recognise the significance of genomics in their practice, the Genomics Ed-ucation Programme (GEP) has created a new resource in the Genomics in Healthcare series: Genomics in Midwifery. The webpage brings together tips and tools to support midwives at any point of their career and at any stage of their genomics learning journey.
The resource brings together a variety of learning opportunities, including an introductory animation highlighting the importance of genomics in midwifery practice, a pregnancy touchpoint walkthrough with good practice tips and a case study that explores why early information about family history can have such a big impact on care.

Digital Clinical Safety Strategy launched
NHSX has published the NHS's first ever Digital Clinical Safety Strategy.
Safe digital health technologies are critical to COVID-19 recovery efforts. Building on the NHS patient safety strategy, the Digital Clinical Safety Strategy has been developed with NHS England and NHS Improvement, NHS Digital, frontline staff and patient bodies.
It sets out two clear aims.
- To improve the safety of digital technologies in health and care, now and in the future.
- To identify and promote the use of digital technologies as solutions to patient safety challenges.

Transforming surgery for the future

Five teams that are catalysing cultural change within the surgical community will showcase their Green Surgery Challenge projects, highlighting the environmental, social, and economic impact made. At the event, delegates will have the opportunity to network and join one of five breakout panel sessions where each of the teams will lead a discussion on a theme in sustainable surgery relating to their project.

Alzheimer’s Society Accelerator Programme opens for applications
The Alzheimer’s Society Accelerator Programme is investing in innovations to improve the lives of people affected by dementia. The programme offers investment up to the value of £100,000 and bespoke innovation support for a 12-month partnership.
The programme is inviting engineers, designers, developers and entrepreneurs to apply. It is looking for applications from teams or individuals at any stage of the product development journey, from a great idea that needs testing through to proven products that need a push to maximise their reach.
Applications must be submitted by midday on Friday 29 October 2021.

Call for new NIA Fellows opens
The NHS Innovation Accelerator (NIA) - an NHS England and NHS Improvement initiative supported by England’s 15 Academic Health Science Networks (AHSNs), hosted at UCLPartners - has launched the call for its 2022 cohort of Fellows.

Applications invited for latest SBRI competitions
SBRI Healthcare, in partnership with the AHSN Network, have launched two new competitions focused on ‘Mental Health Inequalities in Children and Young People’ and ‘NHS Reset and Recovery’.
1. Mental Health Inequalities in Children and Young People
Demand for specialist Children and Young People’s Mental Health Services has continued to increase in recent years, leading to long waiting times and insufficient support, challenges particularly exacerbated in Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities, low-income families, and other marginalised groups during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Bids are invited for funding to develop innovative solutions to tackle three specific challenges:
- Mental health service and support improvements
- Mental health service access
- Support for disadvantaged, marginalised, or Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities.

2. NHS Reset and Recovery from the pandemic and consider new ways of working
Recognising the need to support NHS services to reset and recover from the pandemic, the programme seeks to address this immediate challenge.

- Increasing NHS effectiveness.

Innovate and Grow with the University of Surrey
A new film from the Business Enterprise Team at the University of Surrey features four of its high-tech, high-growth companies and summarises how they have benefitted from collaborating with Surrey researchers as part of the SETsquared Scale-Up and the SPRINT (Space Research and Innovation Network for Technology) Connecting Capability Fund (CCF) programmes.
On November 3 the University will be hosting an online event “Innovate UK Funding Opportunities and How to Succeed”. This will provide an introduction to the Innovate UK funding landscape, including Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs), and give an overview of the support on offer from the Knowledge Transfer Network (KTN), Innovate UK Edge, SETsquared Scale-Up programme, and the Business Enterprise Programmes team.

Supporting early career researchers
NIHR Clinical Research Network Kent, Surrey and Sussex (CRN KSS), Research Design Service South East (RDS SE) and Applied Research Collaboration Kent, Surrey and Sussex (ARC KSS) have launched a new online learning platform for early career researchers (ECRs). It is designed to prepare ECRs to undertake research within health and social care settings.
The learning resources cover three levels:
- Understanding research
- Getting involved in research
- Developing your own research
People can join the pathway at any stage depending on the individual’s level of expertise and knowledge. They should also be able to step off at any stage if they want to follow an academic pathway.

Individual Development Awards
The NIHR Applied Research Collaboration Kent, Surrey and Sussex (ARC KSS) has launched its second round of Individual Development Awards (IDAs), to help support individuals to build their research careers across the region.
All Awards need to closely align with one or more of the ARC KSS research themes and will be allocated to applicants that can demonstrate a clear path in their career development, as well as evidence of how this award will help them towards their research goals.
In return, ARC KSS will provide a bespoke programme of support to successful applicants, including academic and/ or a health or social care professional mentor.
